In its final tuneup before the start of Pacific Coast League play,

Laguna Beach High’s boys’ basketball team emerged Tuesday with a

43-38 nonleague road victory at El Modena.

The Breakers, who improved to 9-7 overall, trailed 11-8 after one

quarter of play, but rallied back to take a 22-17 halftime lead.

They increased their advantage to 36-27 through three quarters,

then withstood a late Vanguards’ rally to claim the win.

Nine Breakers broke into the scoring column. Spencer Willhoit lead

the way with nine points.

Peter Renault and Kyle Hogan each finished with eight points;

Austin Sands had six; Taylor Willhoit scored four; freshman Jeff

Clark hit a three-point basket; and Michael Kote and Ivan Kovacevic,

back in the lineup after sitting out with knee and foot injuries,

each scored two points.

In nonleague girls’ soccer, Laguna Beach picked up its first win

of the season in impressive fashion with a 9-0 whipping of host Sage

Hill.

Nikki Chesley led the scoring barrage with five goals, and Mahlia

Hines, Correy Miller, Emily Rolfing and Jessica Heitl each scored

once.
