CdM blanks Irvine

The Corona del Mar High girls water polo team went on the

defensive and shut out nonleague visitor Irvine, 10-0, Friday.

CdM (8-2) built a 6-0 lead in the first period and coasted to the

victory. CdM senior Brittney Bowlus, bound for UCLA, scored two goals

in the opening quarter. Senior Danielle Carlson and junior Vivian

Liao also finished with two goals, while Daniela DiGiacomo, Christina

Hewko, Katya Eadington and Natalie Wayte added single tallies.

Amy Strack recorded three steals for the Sea Kings. Carlson, Liao

and Bowlus contributed two steals each. Sophomore Brittany Fullen

stopped eight shots, while sophomore Jordan Anae had five saves.

Corona’s junior varsity squad dropped a 10-5 decision to Irvine.

Sophomore Katie Kubas led with two goals.

In another girls water polo game Friday:

Costa Mesa High senior Katie Thorsness scored five goals to help

the Mustangs rout visiting Pacifica, 15-3, in a nonleague game.

Sophomore Sarah Bowman, senior Jessica Bunnell, junior Allison

Gravis and sophomore Allyson Harris scored two goals apiece for the

hosts. Mesa goalie Michelle Payne, a sophomore, had six saves.

In high school boys soccer Friday:

Two goals each in the first and second halves were enough for host

Orange High to pick up a 4-0 Golden West League win over Costa Mesa.

The Mustangs (0-10-1, 0-4-0 in league) had three scoring chances

in the second half but came up empty. David Barnett, Luis Villa Nueva

and Benjamin Elias all had shots in goal for Mesa.

With only five minutes remaining, Sage Hill School’s Cesar Arriaga

scored the Lightning’s only goal and the hosts tied Brethren

Christian, 1-1, Friday in both team’s Academy League opener.

Brethren Christian (0-6-1, 0-0-1 in league) scored in the first

minute on a kick from 35 yards out.

Sage Hill (4-2-2, 0-0-1 in league) controlled the rest of the

game, according to Lightning assistant coach Chris Ellsasser.

Lightning goalkeeper Ethan Tanney made six saves. Julian

Smith-Newman in the midfield and defender Jordan Salinger gave strong

efforts for Sage Hill, Ellsasser said.

In girls soccer:

Sage Hill School opened up Academy League play with a 2-0 victory

over host Brethren Christian Friday in Huntington Beach.

Sara Becker assisted on both Sage Hill goals scored by Katie

McKitterick and Laura Gordon. Both goals came in the second half.

Gordon played in goal in the first half and made six saves while

Vista Murphy took over in the second half and had seven stops for the

Lightning (2-7, 1-0 in league).
