Anteaters’ men swim past UCSD

The UC Irvine men’s team defeated UC San Diego 219-76 and the UCI women lost a close meet to Fresno State 158.5-141.5. It was a fast

day in the pool as meet records were broken in 19 of the 32 events,

including one performance that broke a UCI record and a pool record.

Freshman Lara Bjargardottir broke her own school record by over

five seconds in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.33. That

time also broke the pool record, previously set by Lorena Diaconescu

at 4:55.17 in 1999. Bjargardottir also won the 200 free (1:53.83) and

the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.18) for the Anteaters. Sophomore

Alexis Sheridan tied with Kristi Collins of Fresno State for the win

in the 200 butterfly (2:08.09). Sheridan was also victorious in the

1,000 free (10:16.35) for UCI.

In the men’s competition, UCI led the Tritons all the way. Junior

Phil Garcia won the 50 free (21.58), the 100 free (46.49) and the 200

free (1:41.89). Sophomore Gonny Shimura won the 100 backstroke

(52.85) and the 200 back (1:56.60) for the ‘Eaters. Freshman diver

Anton Slobounov won the one-meter (298.25) and the three-meter

(293.45) diving competition for UCI. Senior captain Attila Szilagyi

won both the 100 breaststroke (58.89) and the 200 breast. Sophomore

Bomb Pattanasinth won the 200-yard fly (1:53.46) and the 200-yard

Individual medley (1:55.17). Freshman Robert Noh won the 1,000 free

(9:52.29) and the 500 free (4:43.29) for the Anteaters.
