Playing its fourth game over a seventh-game stretch did little to

slow the Ocean View High boys’ basketball team last Saturday.

Taking on defending CIF Division IV-A champion Verbum Dei in a

Nike Extravaganza that featured six games played at The Pyramid in

Long Beach, the Seahawks improved to 15-3 overall with a 69-65

victory over the Eagles (9-6).

Ocean View led throughout the contest and withstood several

challenges by the Eagles, and remained in control by hitting its free

throws down the stretch.

Matt Sargeant hit three three-point field goals and led all

scorers with 25 points. Teammate Greg Okwudibonye combined 15 points

and 10 rebounds, and Casey Ortiz finished with 14 points.

The night before the Verbum Dei showdown, Ocean View walloped

Golden West League rival Westminster, 82-43. Ortiz and Sargeant each

scored 19 points, and Okwudibonye had 10.

The Seahawks also downed Orange, 69-57, in league play. Sargeant’s

22 points paced an attack that included 13 points by Ortiz, 10 by

Okwudibonye and nine by Jeff Wilson.

In Golden West League girls’ basketball, Ocean View evened its

league mark at 1-1 with a resounding, 69-28 rout of Orange. Erika

Williams posted 21 points, Elyse McNeff, behind three three-point

baskets, scored 18, and Corinne Esposito scored 12.

In the opening weekend of Sunset League boys’ basketball, Tommy

Grady posted a game-best 25 points, but it took Nick Snowden’s clutch

three-point basket at the buzzer to allow Edison to escape with a

58-56 victory over visiting Esperanza. Snowden had 13 points overall.

Marina used a strong second half to post a 51-28 victory over

visiting Fountain Valley. James Lambert topped all scorers with 19

points, Stephen Baker had 17 points, and Brett Brown had five points,

six steals and six assists for the Vikings.

Huntington Beach went on the road and came away with a 50-49

victory over defending league co-champion Los Alamitos. Brett Van

Voorhis nailed four three-point baskets and finished with 14 points,

Brendan McLaughlin had a game-high 17 points, and James Bailey scored

12.

In the first week of Sunset League girls’ basketball action,

Marina came up with a 56-40 road win at Fountain Valley. Rachel

Maulit’s 27 points led a Vikings’ attack that saw eight players hit

the scoring column.

In a matchup between schools that have won the past four league

titles, Esperanza was able to hold off visiting Edison, 39-36.

Valerie Katayama led all scorers with 19 points, and Rebecca Kepilino

had 10 for the Chargers.

In a game that was close throughout, Huntington Beach suffered a

51-48 home loss to Los Alamitos. Mo Finn’s 16 points paced the

Oilers, and Katia Hadj-Hamou contributed 10.

In Sunset League girls’ soccer, two of the league’s top teams met

at Esperanza, but it was host the Aztecs who emerged with a 2-1

victory. Nicole Huff’s early goal was the lone Edison score.

Huntington Beach suffered a 1-0 loss to visiting Los Alamitos, and

Fountain Valley was a 6-0 winner over Marina.

In boys’ Sunset League soccer, Los Alamitos defeated Huntington

Beach, 3-1, and Fountain Valley topped Marina, 2-0.
