GIRLS WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s girls water polo team

improved to 10-2 with a 12-7 nonleague victory over visiting Long

Beach Wilson Thursday afternoon.

Brittney Bowlus led the way with three goals and Christina Hewko,

Danielle Carlson and Vivian Liao each scored twice. Daniela

DiGiacomo, Katya Eadington and Jessica Harkins, who has been accepted

at Princeton, each scored one goal. Brittany Fullen had five saves.

Estancia falls, 4-3

BOYS SOCCER: The Estancia High boys soccer team dropped a 4-3

Pacific Coast League decision to visiting Ocean View Thursday despite

a hat trick by Luis Mendoza.

Ocean View scored three goals in the final 15 minutes of

regulation to send it into overtime, and eight minutes into the

second overtime scored the winner. Estancia falls to 4-7-1, 1-4-1 in

league.

CdM wins, 2-1

GIRLS SOCCER: The same duo hooked up for both goals for the Corona

del Mar High girls soccer team in its 2-1 Pacific Coast League win

over visiting Tesoro Thursday.

Lauren Loe made a sweeping left kick into the box and Rachel

Yelsey headed the ball in goal to put CdM up, 1-0, with nine minutes

elapsed. Loe found Yelsey for another header with only two minutes

remaining to give the Sea Kings (5-3-1, 2-0 in league) the go-ahead

and eventual-winning margin.

With the win also comes word of a major loss for CdM.

The PCL’s Co-Most Valuable Player of a year ago, senior defender

Lauren Shepherdson, broke her leg falling off a curb last weekend,

ending her high-school soccer career, said CdM Coach Bryan Middleton.

Shepherdson had a pin inserted into her foot in surgery performed

earlier this week.

Tars fall at Irvine, 1-0

GIRLS SOCCER: Newport Harbor High’s girls soccer team dropped a

1-0 Sea View League decision at Irvine Thursday as the Vaqueros

struck in the 77th minute.

Kelly Ferguson drove in to head the ball in after a direct kick

over Newport’s wall and she collided with Sailors’ goalie Cara

DeMille as the ball sailed into the net.

Newport Harbor falls to 3-7-5, 1-1-1 in the Sea View. Irvine

improves to 8-5-1, 2-1-0.

Sailors pin Aliso, 43-36

WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High’s wrestling team dealt visiting

Aliso Niguel a 43-36 Sea View League defeat Thursday night, keyed by

five straight victories.

After the Sailors’ heavyweight Phil Gerard won by pin in 3:24, the

Tars Victor George (103), Kid Lim (112), Morgan Nolan (119) and Jon

Rolsheim (125) rolled.

George won by pin in 0:56, Lim was a 17-1 winner, Nolan won by pin

in 1:43, and Rolsheim rallied from a 4-2 deficit to post a 6-4 win

with a reversal and near-pin with 0:16 left.

Kyle Cody (135) rallied to win by pin in 3:29 and Nate Geier was

a technical fall winner (17-2) at 140. Jeff Landa (160) also rallied

for a pin in 3:40.

Newport ties, 74-74

CLUB SURFING -- Newport Harbor High’s club surfing team split four

events and tied Dana Hills for the second time in two weeks, 74-74,

in a nonleague meet In shoulder high, 2- 3-foot surf on a very cold

morning at 56th Street Thursday. It was the final tuneup before the

State Championships Feb. 22-23 at Oceanside.

Among Coach Scott Morlan’s short board entries, Geoff Rill,

Brightton Brandenburger and Alex Knost were heat winners. It was

Rill’s 11th victory for Newport, which finished 11-1-2 overall.

Tommy Holbrook and Nathan Stoneman had second-place finishes,

David Neira and Erica Hosseini were third, Matt Doheny was fourth,

Brett Catron was fifth and Joey Head, Tyler Hosseini and Morgan Hill

were sixth.

Dan Kretschmar was first in the body board, followed by Michael

Beck (second) and Justin Kast (fourth). It was Kretschmar’s sixth

win.

Erica Hosseini, Amy Lowry and Robin Senour went 4-5-6 in the girls

long/short board event.

The long board was won by Knost while Chase Smith and Catron went

5-6. In was Knost’s ninth victory in 10 starts.
