Estancia in 50-28 conquest

Estancia High’s girls basketball team maintained its stranglehold

on the Golden West League with its fifth win in five starts after

putting visiting Orange away, 51-28, behind the two-pronged attack of

Nancy Castro and Tisha Gray.

Castro scored a career-high 16 points and had nine rebounds and

two steals, while Gray netted 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists

and three steals.

Reserve Imelda Pena netted five points in a three-minute span as

the Eagles, with an unusual starting five, improved to 10-8, 5-0.

Elsewhere in high school girls basketball Tuesday night:

Westminster 62, Costa Mesa 54: The visiting Costa Mesa Mustangs

held a 36-33 halftime lead over the Lions, but could not keep pace in

the third quarter.

Stacee Sanchez scored 14 points, with four three-pointers, and

Susy Trujillo had 11 points, with three three-pointers.

Rickell Reeves had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Rhondi Naff,

held to eight points, had five assists.

“We played hard, and well, and we had our chances,” said Costa

Mesa Coach Jim Weeks, “but we had that cold third quarter.”

Biava Arganda led Westminster, 10-9, 4-1, with 27 points.

Laguna Hills 48, Newport Harbor 37: Newport Harbor did not help

its case from the free-throw line as the host Sailors struggled with

their foul shots (11 of 23) in their Sea View League encounter with

Laguna Hills.

Three Sailors -- junior Victoria Swigart, sophomore Vanessa Miller

and 6-foot senior Lindsey Woller -- scored 10 points each. Woller led

the way underneath with 10 rebounds.

“When you lose by 11 points, you can’t help but look at those

(missed) free throws,” Newport Harbor Coach Jen Thompson said. “(The

Hawks) went 10 of 12 on free throws in the fourth quarter.”

Newport Harbor fell to 11-10, 1-3 in league, while Laguna Hills

improved to 14-6, 3-1. The Sailors travel to Woodbridge on Thursday

at 7 p.m.
