AYSO 97 SOCCER: The Newport boys under-14 Gold All-Star soccer

team from AYSO Region 97 secured a 4-3 victory over the South Irvine

Ferins Saturday on two goals each from Sergio Rodriguez and Nick

Normandin.

Rodriguez scored once off a throw-in from Dillon Giedt and then on

an assist from Sebastian Crivello. Rodriguez also assisted on one of

Normandin’s two goals.

Goalkeeper Tommy Olson made double-digit saves and received help

from defenders Sean Marshall, Jeremy Lewis, Brandon Parole and Phil

Garrett.

Preston Davey played strong at both ends of the field as Andrew

Kaban, Ben Swift and Tobin Olson controlled the midfield.

Rex Nelson and David Garrett rounded out the offense for Newport,

who lost its second game, 1-0 to the South Irvine Beza.

In boys under-12 Silver All-Star action:

Newport 4, South Irvine 1

The Newport boys under-12 Silver-All Stars scored three unanswered

goals to triumph over South Irvine.

Jackson Carmack scored two goals and left forward Simon Hedrick

and Scotty Pantoskey each tallied one goal in the win. Carmack got

Newport up, 1-0, with a goal following passes by Bobby Okvist and

Pantoskey.

South Irvine tied the score on a penalty kick in the first half.

Pressure by forwards Justin Cerrato and Cory Bell-Wheelans helped

to overcome Irvine’s defense in the final quarter.

Midfield play by Cameron Conway, Justin McLaren, John Ryder and

Jordan McLaren created numerous scoring chances.

J.P. Muller, Daniel Netzer and Nathan Dickey combined to thwart

South Irvine advances. Ryder and Hedrick corralled shots in goal.

In girls under-10 Gold All-Star play:

Newport 1, Costa Mesa 1

Newport’s Blakeley Ficenec found the left side of the net off a

pass from Lauren Grupe to tie Costa Mesa, of AYSO Region 120, with

two minutes remaining and that is the way it stayed.

Newport, of Region 97, received strong goalkeeping from Hannah

MacLeod and Cailea Eisenberg while Gwen Gaylord, Sadye Busby and Beth

Barnard led the defense.

Tori Sarris, Natalie Swift, Amy Kanotz and Mary Yeager each worked

hard at midfield and forward to create scoring chances.

Tustin beat Newport, 4-0, earlier in the day.

Gyulay paces the Gold with four goals

AYSO REGION 97: The Newport Beach boys under-10 Gold All-Star team

from AYSO Region 97 goes into the next weekend of play undefeated and

ranked No. 1.

Colton Gyulay scored four goals in wins over Costa Mesa (2-1) and

Tustin (4-0).

He scored two goals in the win against Costa Mesa. Stevie Miller,

Timmy Root, Christian Ochoa and Ivan Becerra each had close shots on

goal with John Barton, Scott Ridgeway and Misha Pakvasa providing

midfield protection.

Taylor Wildman, Drew Diller and Sean Regan helped goalkeeper Logan

Newett with defense and Gyulay again scored in the fourth quarter.

Gyulay again scored in the first two minutes against Tustin and

Barton added a goal in the second period. Gyulay scored on a

breakaway and Miller added another goal in the fourth quarter against

Tustin.

Goalkeeper Logan Newett made eight saves in earning the shutout.

Phil Miller and Tom Gyulay coach the team that won its first game

against CdM, 1-0, before beating Yorba Linda, 7-1.

A shutout party for CdM gold girls

YOUTH SOCCER: The Corona del Mar girls under-12 Gold All-Star soccer team continued its undefeated season with three shutouts. CdM

won its first three games over Tustin (4-0), Newport (3-0) and Yorba

Linda (3-0).

Michelle Zucker, Renee Mycorn and Amy Youngman all played in goal

and are versatile at other positions.

Abby Carrier, Lauren Belove, Chesea Giger and Kaylee Padilla

exhibited tenacious defense and Laura Kopel led an offense that

scored 10 unanswered goals.

F & F tie and win in All-Star action

AYSO REGION 120: The Fast & Furious girls under-12 all-star soccer

team from AYSO Region 120 defeated North Irvine, 1-0, and then tied

Tustin, 1-1, in games Saturday.

In the North Irvine game, Karen Villalba scored her first goal of

the season on passes from halfback Cory Patelski and forward Daisy

Martinez. Fullbacks Cori Chapin, Teresa Fox and Alex Payzant provided

strong defense.

In the second game, Fast & Furious fell behind, 1-0, before

halfback Kendra Fisher fed the ball to Martinez, who found the back

of the net. Forward Carlee Tuppan and halfback Abby Scheaffer both

played well.

Staunch defense not quite enough

YOUTH SOCCER: Both North Irvine and South Irvine boys under-12

soccer teams defeated the Newport Beach Gold All-Stars, 1-0, in games

played Saturday.

Hayden Navarro and Tim Barela each played strong in goal and Jeff

Newman, Justin Faber made some well-timed back tackles with Tom Badum

beating Irvine players to the ball.

Kyle Evans, Grady Kough, Joel Betonte and Eric Holland anchored

the midfield. Newport’s forward line of Sean Thompson, Jay Ordaz and

Adrian Rodriguez penetrated Irvine’s goal area. Christian Scott stole

the ball often with Easton Giedt and Derek Boler each making some

strong defensive tackles.

CdM boys under-12 team goes 2-0 AYSO REGION 57: Led by Camden Nicholson’s four goals in a 4-1

come-from-behind victory over Costa Mesa, the Corona del Mar boys

under-12 soccer all-stars from AYSO Region 57 swept two tournament

games last weekend.

CdM defeated South Irvine, 2-0, in the first game on goals by John

Doering and Connor Bannan. Assists came from Bannan and Nicholson.

With the two wins, CdM took sole possession of first place.

Steady defense was provided by goalkeeper Kendall Pick, fullbacks

James Cunningham, Mat Cohen and Mike McKenna along with sweepers Wes

Baker, Bannan and stopper Bunk Hooper.

CdM’s midfielders Hunter Adler, Ori Tabak, Cory Donovan and Tommy

Bangert all controlled their positions.

Head coach Rick Nicholson said the win over Costa Mesa was the

team’s best game of the season.

CdM Blues Clues play blank-out

YOUTH SOCCER: The Corona del Mar Blues Clues, a girls under-12

Silver All-Star soccer team, defeated South Irvine, 3-0, and Costa

Mesa, 1-0, improving to 4-0 on the season.

CdM had three goals from Claire Schmidt against Irvine and one

from Megan Otterbein to defeat previously-unbeaten Costa Mesa.

The defense was led by goalkeeper McKenna Caskey and defenders

Leila Pozin, Taylor Rhodes, Layne Kelley, Alexa Cohen and Rylie

LeVasseur.

Help on offense came from Kimberly Condino, Kelsey Davis, Valerie

Avila, Rebecca Beyer, Kathryn Conner and Amanda Johnson.

Final spring signups Saturday

PONY BASEBALL: Representatives from Costa Mesa Pony Baseball will

hold a final spring registration Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the

Costa Mesa High gym.

The Pony Division is for players ages 13-14. Registration costs

$120 per player. Teams from Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar Pony

play in the same conference.

Hornets in 68-58 victory over Bulls

YOUTH HOOPS: The Hornets improved to 6-0 in the season with a

68-58 win over the Bulls in a Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball

seventh- and eighth-grade boys Division I game.

They were led on offense by Chase Pinesett (19 points, eight rebounds and one steal) and Eric Rask (18 points, four rebounds,

three assists and four steals).

Thomas Dialynas (14 points, six rebounds, two assists and one

steal), J.P. Gormly (six points, five rebounds and one assist) also

contributed offensively.

Defensive help was provided by Timothy Regan (one assist), Kevin

Rask (seven points, two rebounds and two assists) and Andy Rovzar

(four points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals).

Lacrosse team on the horizon

CLUB LACROSSE: Coach Matt Bond is starting a boys high-school aged

lacrosse team in Corona del Mar.

Boys ages 9-12 are welcome to tryout for the team and can contact

The season will run from March 10 to May 17 with practices

beginning Feb. 1.

There are currently 20 lacrosse teams comprised of high-school

aged players in Orange County and more than a quarter of a million

compete in lacrosse across the United States.

Newport bests Laguna Hills, 5-2

CLUB ROLLER HOCKEY: Three third-period goals broke a 2-2 tie and

catapulted the Newport Harbor roller hockey team to a 5-2 victory

over Laguna Hills at the Gretzky Ice Center in Irvine Monday.

Kevin Wong, Alex Crouse and Collin Insley each found the net in

the third period. Vincent Mungo added two assists in the period to go

with two more in the first quarter when Newport built a 2-0 lead.

Cory Adler took the puck on a breakaway and slipped it into the

corner of the net and Kyle Matthews followed with a hard shot for a

goal.

Calvin Anderson, Chase Kelly and Preston Kelly denied Laguna Hills

any scoring until Michael McVerry sent a direct shot past Newport

goalie Elliot Thacker. Adam Brown tied the score from the point.

Casserly puts up four in Newport win

FROSH-SOPH ROLLER HOCKEY: Four goals from Grant Casserly led the

way for the Newport Harbor frosh-soph roller hockey team as it

defeated Mater Dei, 9-1, for its ninth victory in as many games.

Newport remains in first place with the win.

Rory Campbell chipped in with two goals and two assists while Kyle

Pfeiffer dished five assists.

Rhett Palmer collected one goal and three assists. Newport’s

defense held Mater Dei to just six shots on goal.

Sailors swamp University, 17-1

GIRLS FROSH-SOPH WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High’s frosh-soph

girls water polo team remained undefeated with a 17-1 Sea View League

victory Wednesday against visiting Irvine.

The Sailors (10-0, 2-0 in league) were led by Jesse Womble’s four

goals and three players that tallied three goals each including, Leah

Robertson, Cali Manderino and Kendal Nelson.

Nelson made seven saves in goal and Elizabeth Layton added three

stops in the cage for the Sailors.

Newport’s junior varsity team defeated University, 12-3, Saturday.

Scoring leaders for Newport included Sabrina Cook (three goals)

with Sarah Mutt and Ashling Taylor each collecting two goals for the

victors.
