COLLEGE MEN’S HOOPS: UC Irvine senior Mike Hood shared Big West

Conference Player of the Week honors after leading the Anteaters

men’s basketball team to a pair of wins last week.

Hood, a 6-foot-4 guard who shared the weekly award with UC Santa

Barbara’s Branduinn Fullove, hit an off-balance scoop shot in the

lane at the buzzer to defeat Utah State in overtime, 75-73, Jan. 15.

He tied his season high with 17 points, canning a trio of

three-pointers and going 4-for-4 from the line. It was the second

straight game-winner for Hood, who hit the go-ahead bucket in a win

at UC Riverside, Jan. 11.

COLLEGE MEN’S HOOPS: UC Irvine’s Aras Baskauskas, a junior guard

on the Anteaters men’s basketball team, received a $1,000 grant for

graduate studies from the Southern California Sports Broadcasters.

Baskauskas, who has already earned his bachelor’s degree in

philosophy, is a graduate student in business administration at UCI.

He is in his fourth year with the Anteater program after redshirting

in 1999-2000.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER: Two goals from Marina Abdul along with

single scores from Elise Carroll and Rachel McMasters spurred the

Estancia High girls soccer team (3-6-4, 2-3-1 in the Golden West

League) to a 4-1 win over Orange in league play Tuesday.

Paula Arona made four saves and Arwyn Knott added one stop in goal

for the victorious Eagles.

FROSH-SOPH GIRLS WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High’s frosh-soph

girls water polo team remained undefeated with a 17-1 Sea View League

victory Wednesday afternoon against the visiting Irvine Vaqueros.

The Sailors (10-0, 2-0 in league) were led by Jesse Womble’s four

goals and three players that tallied three goals each including, Leah

Robertson, Cali Manderino and Kendal Nelson.

Nelson made seven saves in goal and Elizabeth Layton added three

stops in the cage for the Sailors.
