Huntington Beach High sophomore Korey LaPoint came up with his

first big win Jan. 16 by taking first place in the boys’ shortboard

division of the Sunset League All-Star Meet held at the south side of

the Huntington Beach Pier.

The event became a wide-open affair when Huntington Beach’s Brett

Simpson, who was the division’s MVP, suffered a knee injury on his

last ride of his first heat. He did not return to the competition.

The girls’ shortboard crown went to Oiler senior Eva Lewington,

who won the event for the third consecutive year.

Lewington also earned the division’s MVP honor.

In the bodyboard final, Edison senior Zack O’Brien won the event,

beating out runner-up Darren Moody of Huntington Beach High and

Edison teammate Chris Espinoza, who finished third.

Espinoza, a sophomore, was named the division’s MVP.

“Our team just got better as the year progressed and we became

more assertive along the way,” Edison coach Zoran Forigiarini said.

“The best thing about this group is that they really came together as

a team.”

The Sunset League All-Star Meet held competition in boys’ and

girls’ shortboard, longboard and bodyboard. The top six boys, two

girls, two longboarders and two shortboarders, competed in the event.
