Surf City has hired away San Bernardino’s information services

director.

The City Council on Tuesday appointed Janis M. Ingels as the

city’s new information services director to fill a job Fire Chief

Michael Dolder had been handling.

“Janis Ingels brings three decades of experience in information

systems,” City Administrator Ray Silver said. “With her guidance, we

will be able to offer cutting-edge technology and services to run the

city more efficiently and effectively for its citizens.”

Ingels spent the last 12 years of her career with San Bernardino

in a similar post. She managed a team of 21 employees who served 18

different city departments.

In San Bernardino, Ingels managed that city’s replacement of the

police and fire departments’ dispatch and records-management systems.

She also replaced that city’s backbone network, completed a master

plan for technological upgrades and implemented document-imaging

systems.

Ingels, who is scheduled to start in Surf City on Feb. 10, will be

asked to tackle a handful of challenges on the job. She’ll be asked

to develop a system that allows for online transactions, as well as

revamping the city’s Web site (www.surfcity-hb.org).

Ingels is also expected to streamline the city’s computer system.

Before her stint in San Bernardino, Ingels was a self-employed

consultant in the technology field. She offered her services to

private companies, including strategic planning, custom programming

and project management.

Ingels was a private-sector consultant from 1987 to 1990.

For the five years leading up to 1987, Ingels held a job as a

regional technical support analyst for McDonnell Douglas in Irvine.

From 1974 to 1982, Ingels was a senior programmer for D.A.B.

Industries, which distributed aluminum and brass parts. It was based

in Nashville, Tenn.
