CdM, Newport duel
GIRLS WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s girls water polo team won
twice and rolls into today’s semifinals in the Tournament of
Champions at UC Santa Barbara, having pushed aside Carlsbad in the
tournament opener Friday, 8-4, before posting a 7-1 victory over Los
Alamitos.
The Sea Kings will meet Back Bay rival Newport Harbor at 1:15 p.m.
today, the winner most likely to face No. 1-ranked, No. 1-seeded,
undefeated and two-time defending champion Foothill at 5:30. Foothill
meets Santa Margarita in the other semi.
Christina Hewko scored five goals and Danielle Carlson netted two
goals in the victory over Carlsbad. Brittney Bowlus also scored a
goal and Brittany Fullen had seven saves. CdM, up 4-0 at halftime,
finished with 10 steals.
In the quarterfinal win over Los Alamitos, CdM missed its first 11
shots and had a precarious 1-0 halftime lead. A 90-second span early
in the third quarter saw Vivian Liao, Carlson and Katya Eadington
score goals to pace a 4-1 burst. Fullen was the game’s key, coming up
wth 14 saves.
Carlson finished with three goals, Eadington with two goals and
Liao and Christina Hewko with one goal each.
Newport Harbor was a 10-4 winner over University High of San Diego
in the first round, highlighted by Paige Lansing’s two goals. In the
quarterfinal, against Long Beach Wilson, the Sailors won, 10-3,
behind Annie Wight’s three goals. CdM defeated Newport Harbor, 6-5,
in a nonleague game Dec. 20.
Corona del Mar claims 4-0 victory
BOYS SOCCER: Junior midfielder Julien Cerutti posted a natural hat
trick, his first of the season, by scoring the first three goals in
the Corona del Mar High’s 4-0 Pacific Coast League boys soccer
victory over host Calvary Chapel Friday.
The win, the fifth in a row for CdM, improved the Sea Kings to
11-4-2, 4-0-0 in league.
It sets up a first-place showdown with Northwood, Wednesday at
CdM. The Timberwolves entered Friday’s game 3-0-0 in league.
Cerutti beat the keeper from 25 yards out for the only first-half
goal, then scored after a steal and converted a free kick to finish
out his day.
Sophomore Brandon Barrett added a late goal for the winners, who
posted their second shutout of the week. Senior goalie Phil Stemler
made four saves and backup Jay Zimmerman added one in the final 10
minutes.
Estancia explodes for 6-2 victory
BOYS SOCCER: Estancia High’s Eagles showed super balance and
strength in powering past host Ocean View in Golden West League play
Friday.
Javier Millan, Noe Martinez, Luis Mendoza, Jason Cassidy, Ricardo
Avila and Javier Ramirez each struck for a goal apiece, and Sergio
Madriga and Juan Castaneda each had a save in goal. Castaneda,
brought up from the JVs, was spectacular in a one-on-one duel with
Ocean View’s No. 1 threat. The Eagles, who led 2-0, after the first
four minutes, improved to 5-8-2, 2-5-1 in league.
Mesa shows Argonauts the door, 8-5
GIRLS WATER POLO: Four goals by senior Katie Thorsness led the
Costa Mesa High girls water polo team to an 8-5 nonleague win over
visiting Garden Grove Friday.
Mesa (10-3, 3-0 in the Golden West League) led, 8-3, at the end of
three quarters.
Senior Allison Gravis scored two goals and Jessica Steenhard and
sophomore Allyson Harris each had single tallies for Mesa. Mustangs’
goalkeeper Michelle Payne made 10 saves.
Christine Twohig led the Mustangs with five assists and Harris
(two) and Gravis (one) aided in the passing category.
Mustangs drop 3-1 decision
BOYS SOCCER: Costa Mesa High’s Gabriel Espinosa evened the score,
1-1, on an assist from Luis Villa Nueva, but the visiting Saddleback
Roadrunners scored two second half goals to secure a 3-1 win in
Golden West League boys soccer action Friday. The Mustangs are
0-15-1, 0-8.
Tars fall at Woodbridge, 1-0
BOYS SOCCER: Host Woodbridge High scored in the first 20 minutes
and held on for a 1-0 Sea View League boys soccer victory over
Newport Harbor Friday at Alton Park.
Both teams came in unbeaten in four league games, but the Warriors
complete the first round of league play in sole possession of first
with a 4-0-1 league mark. Newport is 5-3-3, 3-1-1.
Sage Hill puts away Whitney, 3-2
BOYS SOCCER: The Sage Hill School’s Caesar Arriaga, Chris
Chiboucas and Julian Smith-Newman each scored a goal as the Lightning
recorded a 3-2 win over visiting Whitney in an Academy League duel.
The Lightning is 6-3-2, 2-1-1 in league. Whitney falls to 7-4-0,
3-1-0.
Sage Hill tops Whitney, 3-2
GIRLS SOCCER: Sage Hill School’s Megan Curry scored a hat trick
and the Lightning held on for a 3-2 win in Academy League girls
soccer action Friday at host Whitney.
Curry scored her first goal to give Sage Hill (3-8, 2-2 in league)
a 1-0 lead on an assist from Ashley Negrette. Curry scored her second
goal on a penalty kick and a pass from Amy Werblin to Curry sent in
the winning goal.
Anteaters upset BYU, 4-3
COLLEGE MEN’S TENNIS: The UC Irvine Anteaters upset visiting
Brigham Young University, 4-3, at the Anteater Tennis Stadium Friday.
Junior Jonathan Endrikat sealed the win with his 3-6, 7-5, 6-3
victory over Erik Nyman in the No. 1 singles match. UCI improves to
1-2.
