At first, things were not going too well for photographer Kent

Treptow last Sunday during his assignment to photograph whale

watching at Crystal Cove State Park. The problem was that people had

shown up to view the whales, but the whales were not making an

appearance. Kent had shot some youngsters, but their guardian wished

them to remain unidentified. Soon an hour had passed and there was

not much activity happening until Kent noticed 10-year-old

Christopher Young. Christopher did not seem to care that there were

no visible whales; he was intrigued enough by the plentiful sea lions

and elephant seals. Kent trained his camera on Christopher and waited

for the right moment. As he and the docents directed their binoculars

toward the sea lions, the photo came together.
