Small plane makes emergency landing

The front landing gear of a Cessna 210 single-engine plane failed

during an emergency landing at John Wayne Airport on Sunday

afternoon, planting its nose in the runway, officials said.

The runway used for smaller planes at the airport was closed for

about half an hour until the plane was towed away, airport spokesman

Justin McCusker said.

The one person aboard the plane was uninjured, he said. The pilot

reported to the tower at 3 p.m. that his landing gear indicator had

come on, McCusker said.

“He was able to land successfully, but was not able to taxi

because, as he was coming to a stop, one of the tires collapsed and

the front part of the plane was driven into the runway,” he said.

McCusker said he does not know where the plane flew in from.

Residents vacated after smoke fills home

Residents of a Newport Beach convalescent home were briefly

evacuated Sunday afternoon after smoke from an air conditioning

compressor leaked oil, blowing smoke through the vents, fire

officials said.

Thirty to 40 residents at Flagship Healthcare Center on Flagship

Road had to stay out for a few minutes until firefighters cleared the

air inside, said Donna Boston, public information officer for the

Newport Beach Fire Department.

“Firefighters investigated the roof and shut off gas and power to

ensure safety,” she said.

They then found the one leaking unit, Boston said.

No one was reported injured in the incident.

No charges filed against Rodman yet

The Orange County district attorney has yet to file charges

against Dennis Rodman for allegedly assaulting his live-in

girlfriend, officials said Monday.

The Newport Beach Police Department had sent the paperwork to the

district attorney last week with the recommendation that charges be

filed, Lt. John Klein said.

But the district attorney has sent it back to Newport Beach “for

further investigation,” which is “quite common,” Deputy Dist. Atty.

Susan Schroeder said.

Rodman was arrested at his Seashore Drive home the morning of Jan.

10 on suspicion of assaulting the woman. Police officers responded to

a 911 call from the woman at about 2 a.m. The woman, whose name is

not being revealed because she may be a victim of domestic violence,

said Rodman had given her a cut on her upper lip and a bump on the

head.

Rodman also “had alcohol on his breath” when he was arrested,

police said. He spent a few hours in jail, but was out after posting

a $25,000 bail.
