Battle of the Bay goes to Newport

* AYSO 97 SOCCER: Nick Normandin and Tobin Olson each scored one

goal for Newport Beach in its 2-0 defeat of Corona del Mar in boys

under-14 Gold All-Star soccer action for AYSO Region 97.

Andrew Kaban assisted on Olson’s goal in the second quarter and

Sergio Rodriguez passed to Normandin on his score.

Sebastian Crivello (left wing) played three strong quarters of

defense and goalkeeper Tommy Olson was assisted by Sean Marshall and

Jeremy Marshall.

Ben Swift, Dillon Giedt and Rex Nelson led the offensive attack

for Newport.

In boys under-12 play:

* Newport 6, Yorba Linda 0

Stellar performances by John Ryder and Simon Hedrick led to

Newport’s first shutout of the season.

Bobby Okvist started the scoring early and ended the first half

with a hat trick due to support from Jackson Carmack, Scotty Pantosky

and Justin Cerrato.

Joshua Doering scored twice in the second half with help from

midfielders Justin McLaren, Luc Heasley and Cameron Conway. Corey

Bell-Wheelans broke through Irvine’s defense for Newport’s final goal

on an assist by Carmack.

Newport’ defensive unit of J.P. Muller, Jordan McLaren, Nathan

Dickey and Daniel Netzer kept the ball in Irvine territory for much

of the game.

* South Irvine 2, Newport 1

Newport scored its lone goal on a header by Okvist, set up by

Cerrato’s corner kick.

In boys under-10 action:

Newport remained in first place with two wins last weekend: 3-2

over Corona del Mar and a 4-0 decision against South Irvine.

The boys under-10 Gold All-Star soccer team from AYSO Region 97

erased a 2-1 CdM lead with third-period goals from John Barton and

Colton Gyulay.

CdM scored early in the first quarter but Newport answered with a

goal by Gyulay on a Barton assist.

Steven Miller scored two goals in the second quarter to help

Newport defeat South Irvine.

Christian Ochoa scored on a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead and Barton

found the back of the net on a breakaway in the fourth period to

round out the Newport scoring.

Timmy Root and Scott Ridgeway assisted the offense with midfield

help from Misha Pakvasa, Ivan Becerra and Ochoa.

Sean Regan, Drew Diller, Taylor Wildman and goalkeeper Logan

Newett anchored the defense.

In girls under-10 Gold All-Star action:

* Newport maintained its spot in second place with two wins last

weekend.

Newport beat Corona del Mar, 2-1, Saturday morning.

CdM scored first in the third quarter but Beth Barnard scored off

a rebound and Lauren Grupe tallied the game-winner on an assist by

Tori Sarris.

Hannah McLeod and Mary Yeager played strong in goal and the

defense was led by Gwen Gaylord and Sadye Busby.

Newport beat South Irvine, 2-1, in the afternoon match.

Claire Silva scored Newport’s first goal on an assist from Natalie

Swift in the first quarter.

After an Irvine tied it in the second quarter, Blakeley Ficenec

scored the game-winner off a corner kick from Barnard.

Amy Kanotz, Cailea Eisenberg, Yeager and Grupe created many

scoring opportunities throughout the second half.

McLeod, Busby and Gaylord (sweeper) controlled the defense.

Rush hour championship

* CLUB SOCCER: The OCU Rush, a Newport under-10 girls soccer

team, won its two games last weekend to take the championship of the

OCU Invitational at UC Irvine

McKenzie Brown scored the only goal in the defeat of Crown City

United of Burbank in the early game Sunday.

In the later game Sunday, the Rush came away with a 5-1 victory

over Cerritos after trailing, 1-0.

Brown scored three goals and teammates Marta Tena and Jordan

Dillion added to the total.

Defenders Allie Gordon and Dillion helped limit Cerritos to only

nine shots on goalkeeper Alexa Ossipoff.

The Rush allowed only two goals the entire tournament. Maria

Swift, Ashleigh Smith, Haley Raguse, Ellie Nadel, Jennie Penunuri,

Natalie Rempalski and Jenna Vogel contributed to the team’s solid

play.

The Rush finished second in its club league season with only one

loss and made it to the quarterfinals of the League Cup, which

includes under-10 girls teams from Orange and Los Angeles counties.

Undefeated Raiders have the balance

* YOUTH HOOPS: The Newport-Mesa All-Net fifth-grade Red Raiders

basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 49-41 victory over Santa

Margarita.

Strong defense led the Raiders to the win.

Trevor Miles led Newport in scoring with 12 points followed by

Andrew Roth (eight), Parker Stone (seven) and Fletcher Della Grotta

(seven).

Dillon Campbell and Collin Krahe led in the steal department with

four and three, respectively. Andrew Rios and J.D. Abbott (five and

four rebounds, respectively) controlled the glass.

Randall Nelson led with seven assists.

In third/fourth-grade girls action:

* Golden Hawks 23, Sparks 19

Kelsey Woo led the Hawks with nine points and Chelsea Barth

contributed eight.

Katheryn Conner and Addie Richley led the defense.

The Sparks were paced by Duran Sharp’s six points and Alex

Aiello’s five.

* Wizards 13, Magic 7

Saylor Schroff led the Wizards with six points and Brooke Lux

added four.

Mary McKenna had four points for the Magic.

* Newport Lakers 27, Irvine Roadrunners 17

Kelsey Carrido led the Lakers with six points. Valerie Martin and

Elika Fateri played well defensively and on the boards.

Hornets coast to victory, 66-37

* YOUTH HOOPS: The Hornets improved to 7-0 with a 66-37 victory

over the Mavericks in boys seventh- and eighth-grade Newport-Mesa

National Junior Basketball action.

Four players scored in double figures including Erik Rask and Andy

Rovzar, each with 12 points, followed by Chase Pinesett with 11 and

Austin Apramian’s 10.

Gus Ellis scored eight points while Thomas Dialynas (seven), Kevin

Rask (four), and Timothy Regan and J.P. Gormly (each with two), added

to the total for Newport.

Pinesett led with eight rebounds followed by Ellis’ six, Erik

Rask’s and Timothy Regan’s four, Apramian and Rovzar’s three and J.P.

Gormly and Kevin Rask’s two boards.

Erik Rask led with four assists as Rovzar and Erik Rask each

tallied two. Pinesett, Dialynas and Regan each had one assist.

Dialynas contributed two steals followed by Kevin Rask and Ellis’

one each. Ellis and Pinesett also tallied one block apiece.

CdM blanks both weekend foes

* AYSO REGION 57: The Corona del Mar boys under-10 Gold All-Star soccer team from AYSO Region 57 tallied two shutout victories last

weekend.

CdM trounced visiting Tustin, 8-0, with Mason Case and Jack McBean

each scoring three goals along with Kjell Wolker and Connor Gaal

collecting single scores. Brennan Anderson assisted on Wolker’s goal.

Defenders Garrett Larson, Blake Thomsen and Brent Gray stymied

numerous offensive attacks while setting up offensive sets with

passes to midfielders.

CdM beat North Irvine, 4-0, in the early game Saturday.

Goalkeeper Clark Cashion made a save, then booted the ball to Jack

Gorab at midfield. Gorab led Gaal with a touch pass and the latter

blasted the ball into the net from 10 yards out.

Hector Marino scored from 18 yards out on an angled shot late in

the third quarter.

With the two wins, Cashion recorded his third shutout of the

tournament.

Blues find all the clues

* YOUTH SOCCER: The Corona del Mar Blues Clues girls under-12

Silver All-Star soccer team defeated Newport, 4-0, to remain

undefeated at 5-0.

Claire Schmidt scored two goals with Megan Otterbein and Leila

Pozin each tallying single scores.

Kimberly Condino, Kelsey Davis, Valerie Avila, Rebecca Beyer,

Kathryn Conner and Amanda Johnson provided offensive support.

Goalkeeper McKenna Caskey along with defenders Taylor Rhodes,

Layne Kelley, Alexa Cohen and Rylie LeVasseur, anchored the defense.

Newport Beach defeats CdM, 4-1

* YOUTH SOCCER: The Corona del Mar All-Stars defeated Newport

Beach, 4-1, in boys under-12 Gold soccer action Saturday.

Adrian Rodriguez scored on a penalty kick for Newport. Goalkeepers

Tim Barela and Hayden Navarro saves many shots on goal and received

defensive assistance from Tom Badum. Justin Faber and Jeff Newman

rounded out the defense.

Jay Ordaz penetrated the CdM defense and had some shots on goal

while forward Eric Holland and Adrian Rodriguez assisted on offense.

Aggressive tackles by Easton Giedt provided midfield protection

and Joel Betonte and Derek Boler moved the ball well.

Lucky Charms have good fortune

* AYSO REGION 120: The Lucky Charms, a girls under-10 soccer

team from AYSO Region 120, maintained its hold on first place in the

Area 11Q Silver All-Star championships with a 3-0 victory over

Tustin.

Zulekya Ruiz, Jackie Freiberger and Molly McFarland each scored

goals for the Charms and goalkeeper Ariana Dispalatro recorded her

fourth shutout in five games.

Whitney McAleer, Amanda Wisneiski and Cindy Rubio all helped in

the victory.

The Charms played Yorba Linda to a 1-1 tie also in weekend play.

Lei Hookano scored the lone Mesa goal. Defenders Vanessa Estrada

and Lauren Islas along with midfielder Hunter Strodel held strong.

Smooth sailing for Slammers

* CLUB SOCCER: The Newport Beach Slammers, a girls under-11 club

soccer team ranked sixth in the nation, won its fourth tournament

this season at the 20th annual Sereno Classic in Mesa, Ariz.

In the final the Slammers beat the Dallas Texans, 1-0, with a goal by Danielle Wisniewski.

The Slammers won all four games in pool play format, scoring 11

goals against the Dallas Sting, Surf, Gilbert Divas (Ariz.) and the

Golden Eagles (Ariz.).

Goalkeepers Kate Baldoni and Emma Stevens each had a save to

contribute to the final shutout.
