INSIDE THE SCHOOL DISTRICT

Here are some of the decisions coming out of Tuesday’s school

board meeting:

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS

The board approved the kindergarten through 12th-grade school

improvement plans for the 2002-03 school year. These plans are a

summary of research conducted by site administrators, staff and

community that document student improvement in all areas of

education. The plans, which board members acclaimed for their

thoroughness, provide district officials with data-driven information

from extensive studies on student achievement at each site.

WHAT IT MEANS

The schools will be responsible for staying on top of the needed

improvements documented in their plans, which will also enable

district officials and community members to follow student progress

more easily.

ARTS GRANT PROGRAM

The board approved the submission of a $22,000 grant application,

requested by Our Students/Ourselves -- Instruction with Arts

Standards and Assessment, for visual and performing arts in the

district.

WHAT IT MEANS

The grant would enhance efforts to expand and implement

standard-based instruction in the arts for all students by placing

more importance on the arts as a core course.

GOVERNOR’S PROPOSED BUDGET

Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Paul Reed gave a

detailed and informative presentation on the major highlights of the

governor’s proposed budget.

WHAT IT MEANS

The purpose of the presentation was simply to inform board members

of the budget’s status. No decisions were made. Further updates are

expected.
