Hot stuffy air wasn’t the only element making the Estancia High

boys basketball team sweat Thursday night. An unrelenting Saddleback

defense forced four turnovers in the overtime period and the

Roadrunners came away with a 63-57 victory in Golden West League

play.

Saddleback’s Demetrius May scored nine of his game-high 22 points

in the overtime, as the Roadrunners (8-13, 2-6 in league) outscored

Estancia, 12-6, in the period after Eagles’ leading-scorer Matt

Cachola (15 points) connected for one of his two three-point baskets

with 41 seconds left in regulation to secure the tie.

Cachola’s second three pulled the Eagles (14-8, 4-4) within one

with 1:13 to go in overtime but May heaved the inbounds pass to

Robert Sosa at midcourt and the senior forward drew the foul as he

drove to the basket. After making one free throw, Saddleback’s

Anthony Ory stole an errant pass and sent the pass to May, who was

fouled and converted both free throws to give the hosts a 60-56 edge

with 32 seconds remaining. The Roadrunners made 11 of 23 free throws

in the final two periods while the Eagles attempted only four and

converted one in the second half.

“French’s Bakery would have been proud with how many turnovers we

had,” said Estancia Coach Chris Sorce.

Joey Lindquist scored 14 points to go with nine rebounds while

Jordan Stroman collected a double-double (points and rebounds) with

11 and 14, respectively. Cachola had five assists.
