Lighting it up doesn’t do it for Vanguard U.

* COLLEGE BASEBALL: Vanguard University’s baseball team pounded

out 29 hits and scored 24 runs in a nonconference double-header at UC

San Diego Saturday, and lost both games.

UC San Diego answered those numbers with 28 hits and 26 runs and

pulled out 14-13 and 12-11 victories.

Robert Cruz and Joe Carnahan were each 3 for 5 and Carnahan,

Justin Millward, Jonathan Bower and Cruz each doubled.

Banging out two hits apiece for the Lions were Matt Tisthammer,

Jason Searle, Millward and Bower.

In the second game, Carnahan and Millward each doubled, again,

Cruz went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run and five RBIs, and Searle

had a home run.

Carnahan was 3 for 3 and Scott Martin went 3 for 4.

But when the dust had cleared the Lions had been swept.

UCSD survived a two-run uprising by Vanguard in the ninth inning

of the opener, and in the nightcap, scored a run in the bottom of the

seventh to win after Vanguard’s Lions scored twice in the top of the

inning to tie it a 13-13.

Anteaters sparkle

* INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD: UCI’s Suzanne Purmort and Lauren Adams

went 1-2 in the 400-meter dash with times of 58.35 and 59.00,

respectively at the Northern Arizona Skydome in Flagstaff in a meet

with Fresno State and Northern Arizona Saturday.

The Anteaters’ Amber Nefas finished second in the triple jump with

a mark of 36-0 and she was third in the 400 (59.35).

Annmarie Turpin and Jessica Stafford placed 1-2 in the high jump,

with Turpin going 5-5 1/4 and Stafford 5-3 3/4. Turpin finished

second in the 60 hurdles (8.95) and she was third in the long jump at

16-7 1/4.

Sophomore Erin Curtis won the pole vault (12-5 1/4, finished third

in the 60 (7.73) and fourth in the 200 (25.07).

Vanguard sweeps

* SOFTBALL: Vanguard University opened the 2003 softball season

with overwhelming victories over visiting Patten College Saturday,

posting 8-0 and 12-4 nonconference decisions.

Marciea Ball fired a no-hitter in the opener, allowing just one

base-runner on an infield error.

She struck out three and walked no one in a mercy-ending,

five-inning stint.

Jill Jessen and Lisa Jackson tripled for Vanguard and Ashley Mauro

had a double and scored three runs.

In the second game, Krystal Keltner earned her first collegiate

victory with a six-hitter.

Vanguard mercied Patten in the second game, too, with a seven-run

fifth inning.

Mauro had two hits and four RBIs while Lisa Jackson singled and

hit an inside-the-park home run.

Anteaters net 4-3 win

* MEN’S TENNIS: The UC Irvine Anteaters (2-2) defeated UC San

Diego, 4-3, as part of the UC Challenge Saturday.

Juniors Jonathan Endrikat and Zoran Korac and sophomore Brian

Morton swept 1-2-3 singles, and Peter Surapol, playing in the No. 6

slot, clinched the victory with a 7-6, 6-4 singles win over Blake

Wilson-Hayden.

Endrikat’s 6-2, 6-1 win came at the expense of Corona del Mar High

product Sameer Chopra.

The UC Challenge continues today, starting at 10 a.m.
