Brick sparks Mesa win
Junior Cassey Brick scored a career-high 14 points and helped lead
the Costa Mesa High girls basketball team to a 49-35 win over Golden
West League host Orange Monday.
Brick nailed 3 of 4 three-pointers in the first quarter to offset
the Panthers’ defensive strategy of a box-and-one, focusing on senior
Rhondi Naff. Naff finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four
steals, while Brick added four assists to go with her career night.
Senior Rickell Reeves contributed 10 rebounds and junior Susana
Trujillo scored 13 points.
“We got off to a good start,” said Mesa Coach Jim Weeks, whose
team improved to 13-9, 5-3 in league. “They went box-and-one on
Rhondi, and with Cassey hitting her threes that really helped. Cassey
and Stacey did a good job with three-pointers.”
Orange dropped to 0-8 in league.
Mesa will play visitor to crosstown rival Estancia Wednesday night
at 7.
