COSTA MESA -- Orange Coast College’s women’s basketball team was

staggered by Irvine Valley’s Monica Silivelio, who canned a 14-foot

jumper with one second left for the winning margin in a 54-53 Orange

Empire Conference game on the OCC floor Friday night.

As a result, the Pirates fall to 23-5, 8-2 in the OEC. Irvine

Valley is now 12-12, 4-6.

On the other hand, Orange Coast’s Aaron Bobik took it upon himself

to personally bump off Irvine Valley’s men’s team, 70-44, with a

26-point burst, hitting 5 of 6 three-point attempts and all five free

throws. He hit 8 of 10 overall from the field as the Pirates improved

to 17-11, 5-5.

Coast put the men’s game way with a pair of scoring spurts . A

Bobik three-pointer ignited an 11-4 run to stretch it to 42-30.

A pair of free throws and a lay-up by Bobik capped an 8-0 run at

the 6:39 mark as Coast’s lead grew to 56-36. OCC’s lead grew to 68-41

before settling for the final margin. Stephon Seales had 14 points.

The Coast women were victimized by a sizzling second-half

performance by Silivelio, who had 15 of her game-high 22 points in

the final frame that included a trio from beyond the arc.

She passed up shot opportunities early in the Laser’s final

possession, but got the ball back with four seconds left, drove to

the right free-throw line extended, and dropped in the 14-footer to

claim victory.

Amy Shaw tied the game at 50-50 with a three-pointer with 1:56

left, but the Laser’s April Robles knocked down a short jumper to put

the visitors back on top.

Liz Mendoza connected with another three-pointer to seemingly put

the Pirates in the driver’s seat, but her effort was spoiled by

Silivelio.

Coast hit o just 6 of 13 form the line and 19 of 55 from the

field.

Mendoza led the Pirates with 17 points hitting four of seven from

three-point range, to go along with seven rebounds. Alisa Carrillo

added 10 pins and nine rebounds. April Robles added 10 points, eight of those in the first half, for the Lasers.
