How cold is ice? Ask the Lions

Vanguard University’s women’s basketball team, Golden State

Athletic Conference leaders and No. 14 in the NAIA rankings entering

Saturday night’s GSAC duel with a 12-1 record against Westmont,

proved records are made to be broken.

Unfortunately, these records, which they must be, are for the

wrong reasons as the Lions proved all too human on a night of

futility.

With hands of ice, Vanguard netted 9 of 50 from the field (18%),

including 2 of 19 from three-point range, and proceeded to bow to

Westmont, 56-38, in the usually comfortable confines of the Pit on

the Vanguard campus.

The Lions shot just 8.3% from the field in the first half (2 for

24, including 0 for 10 from beyond the arc) en route to a 26-15

deficit. And it didn’t get much better later.

Jennifer Wilcox and reserve Courtney McKinney each had seven

points for the Lions, who lost on the boards, too, 42-30.

Westmont, 14-11, 9-5, was led by Katie Hardeman, the only player

in the game with double figures (13 points).
