Anteaters’ bats wake up, club the Saints, 9-4

UC Irvine’s baseball team made it two straight at the University

of Santa Clara Saturday, posting a 9-4 nonconference victory.

After being limited to two runs on 12 hits en route to a 1-1

record, the Anteaters exploded with a 13-hit attack, with a three-run

burst in the second inning followed by a game-clearing five-run

fifth.

The Anteaters’ second inning saw Kyle Ryckebosch pick up an RBI on

his single to left, scoring Jordan Szabo, who led off with a single.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Matt Fisher and Jaime Martinez

were hit by a pitch in consecutive at bats, scoring Jeff Werhun and

Jon Horwitz to give the Anteaters a 3-0 lead.

UCI added five runs in the top of the fourth inning, four of which

were unearned, as the Broncos made two costly errors in the field.

Chris Klemm inflicted the most damage, picking up two RBIs on a

single to center field, scoring Fisher from third and Daniel

Miramontes from second, who reached on a throwing error by Thompson.

Santa Clara chipped away at the Anteaters’ lead in the the fourth

inning as freshman Eric Newton connected on his first career home run

with one out. The Broncos added two more runs in the fifth inning,

cutting the UCI lead to 8-4 as Shapiro picked up his second RBI of

the game on a groundout and Jason Matteucci picked up his first RBI

of the game with a single to left field.

Brett Smith picked up the win for UCI, throwing 5 1/3 innings in

which he allowed four runs on eight hits while walking four and

striking out three.

Steve Schroer picked up his first save this season by throwing the

final 3 2/3 innings in which he allowed only one hit.

Klemm paced the UCI offense with his two hits, two runs scored and

two RBI, followed by Szabo, Miramontes and Horwitz who had two hits

apiece.

UCI, 2-1, closes out the three-game series at Santa Clara today at

1 p.m.
