Big West tabs Hood

UC Irvine senior guard Mike Hood has been named the Big West

Conference Player of the Week after leading the Anteaters’ men’s

basketball team to victories over UC Riverside and Cal State

Fullerton last week.

He led the Anteaters with 18 points in the 78-61 win over UC

Riverside last Wednesday and 21 points in Saturday’s 72-52 victory

over Cal State Fullerton. Hood was 13 of 16 (.813) overall from the

field, including 7 of 9 (.778) from three-point range, in the two

wins. He has connected on 18 of 24 (.750) three-pointers in the last

six games and has missed only one free throw all season, hitting 32

of 33 (.970).

Hood, who has raised his season scoring average to 10.4 points per

game, hit the eventual game-winning basket in January wins over UC

Riverside, Utah State and Pacific. He has made 26 of 50 (.520)

three-point baskets in conference play to rank first in the Big West.

The Anteaters, 13-7 overall and 7-4 in the Big West, travel to

first-place Utah State Thursday night (Fox Sports West 2, 5:35 p.m.)

and Idaho Saturday (7:00 p.m.). Both games will be carried live on

KUCI Radio/88.9 FM.
