Vision Laguna

WHAT’S BEHIND IT:

More than 2000 people and 100 civic groups responded to the City

Council’s call in 1999 for community participation in Vision Laguna,

a two-year process to determine what residents want the community to

look like and represent in 2030. The Vision Laguna 2030 Final Report

and Strategic Plan was the distillation of countless hours those

folks spent wrestling with present and future issues such as the

community character, traffic and circulation, environmental

responsibility, arts and culture, economic sustainability, government

and civic participation. The report was presented to the City Council

in January 2002. A streamlined report was presented to the council

the following June.

WHAT NOW:

Vision 2030 recommendations have been in limbo since former

Councilman Paul Freeman presented a proposal for the next step in the

process before leaving office in December. The council declined to

act on Freeman’s proposal. Councilman Steven Dicterow said at the

time that he would present his own proposal.

WHAT’S NEXT:

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach and the

local branch of the League of Women Voters have offered to host a

town meeting at 9:15 a.m., March 8 to discuss the implementation of

the recommendations in the final report. The meeting will be held at

the fellowship, 429 Cypress St. The public is encouraged to attend.

The league is proposing the following agenda:

* A report from each of the eight committees on what, if

anything, has been accomplished in the months since the process has

been on hold.

* Suggestions on how citizens can advocate for the continuance of

the process.

* Organization for monitoring.
