Pirates split

COSTA MESA -- Orange Coast College’s baseball team split two games in

the Cy-Coast Tournament on the Pirates’ campus Sunday, posting an

11-6 victory over College of the Sequoias before bowing to

Southwestern, 5-4.

The Pirates, 7-4-1 overall, unloaded an 11-hit attack in the

opener with five-run bursts in the third and fifth innings, with five

doubles in the assault.

Two-baggers were banged out by Ben Hanna, Brad Miller, Tyler

Shaffer, Manny Pedroza and Derik Easttom.

Hanna, John Grant and Pedroza each had two hits.

Southwestern came up with two in the ninth inning to pull out the

5-4 decision after the Pirates had staked starter Kyle Allen to a 4-3

lead with a three-run fourth inning and a single marker in the

seventh.

Allen, who went 8 1/3 innings, allowed six hits, striking out 12

and walking one before giving way to relief.

Hanna was 2 for 5 with a solo home run and Ryan Mathes was 3 for 4

with a run scored.

Jason Balsley had a solo shot for Southwestern.
