Samantha is a beautiful tabby cat. She was found pregnant in a
local trailer park and rescued by the Newport Beach-based Community
Animal Network. She was suffering from a severe upper respiratory
infection when she gave birth and her four kittens had to be
bottle-fed.
Because of the contagious nature of upper respiratory infections,
no vet hospital would admit Samantha in. In an effort to save her
life, veterinary medical emergency costs amounted to almost $1,000.
“In order to save Samantha’s life and our bank account, the sleep
deprived foster momma was trained by the vet to force feed and give
subcutaneous fluids daily to Samantha,” said founder DiAnna
Pfaff-Martin.
“The foster momma’s effort saved her life,” she added.
The kittens were not so fortunate. All four kittens developed the
infection and were not able to breathe properly. They refused to feed
from the bottle and didn’t have enough strength to survive.
As kitten season has started, Pfaff-Martin says the network’s
donation focus now is a program, “Feed the Kitties,” designed to
provide temporary homes to pregnant cats and kittens found in the
bushes, in addition to raising money to pay for Samantha’s vet bills.
Samantha will be up for adoption soon and Pfaff-Martin says she
will have a purebred Pekinese dog, available this weekend.
