Seahawks reign in Golden West League

For the fifth consecutive year, the Ocean View High boys’ basketball

team reigns supreme in the Golden West League.

The Seahawks won another league championship last weekend as they

ran away from visiting Saddleback, 88-64, in their regular season

finale.

Ocean View actually trailed at the half, 35-34, but outscored the

Roadrunners, 54-29, over the final 16 minutes.

Eleven Seahawks scored in the contest and five scored in double

figures.

Matt Sargeant led the way with 16 points. Casey Ortiz and Bear

Wurts each scored 14, Greg Okwudibonye had 12 and Steve Wilson

finished with 11 points.

Ocean View, which won the league with an 11-0 record, is 24-3

overall heading into CIF playoff action this weekend.

In Sunset League boys’ basketball, champion Marina saw its

four-game league win streak come to a halt in a 58-57 road loss to

Esperanza.

Matt Brennan hit four, three-point baskets and topped all Viking

scorers with 21 points. Matt McNease also hit double figures with 16

points.

Huntington Beach finished at the .500 mark in league play

following a 54-47 home win over Fountain Valley.

Brandon McLaughlin and Brett VanVoorhis shared game-high scoring

honors with 18 apiece.

In Sunset League girls’ basketball, Edison capped its championship

season with a 65-54 road triumph at Los Alamitos.

Three Chargers scored in double figures as Rebecca Kepilino had 23

points, Valerie Katayama scored 20 and Eva Camarena, behind three,

three-point shots, finished with 15 points.

Huntington Beach picked up its fourth league win by rolling past

host Fountain Valley, 50-38, the Oilers pulling away to victory by

limiting the Barons to just four, fourth quarter points.

Katia Hadj-Hamou topped all scorers with 18 points.

Marina dropped a 38-36 home game to Esperanza. Alison Budzinski

led the Vikings with nine points.

In Golden West League girls’ basketball, Ocean View fell to

visiting Estancia, 53-41, which won the league crown with a 12-0

record.

Seahawks junior guard Ahkiah Hunter led all scorers with 17 points

and teammate Corinne Esposito, a junior post, finished with nine

points.
