Loidolt to be honored

Laguna Beach High football player Bryce Loidolt is one of 44 high

school seniors to be honored as a 2002-03 Scholar-Athlete of the

Orange County Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

The players will be honored at the 33rd annual Scholar-Athlete

Awards Banquet on March 10 at the Coast Anaheim Hotel.

The 6-foot-2, 215 pound Loidolt, who played wide receiver and

defensive back, is one of five Pacific Coast League players to earn

the recognition, joining Brendan Egan, Brian Fairbanks, Charles

Nikolenko and Tony Pacheco, all of league champion Northwood.

A player’s qualification for the honor includes a minimum 3.3

grade-point average and first-team all-league honors.

Mission Viejo’s Josh Rodarmel was distinguished as the 2002-03 top

scholar-athlete with a 4.51 grade-point average.

In addition to the high school seniors, three community college

players will be honored.

Pro Football Hall of Fame member Jackie Slater will be one of two

master of ceremonies at the event.

Breakers trio earns all-PCL status

Senior Leslie Schmalzried became the first Laguna Beach girls’

basketball player in recent memory to earn all-league recognition,

Breakers coach Stacy Howard said.

The senior post player was a first-team pick on the All-Pacific

Coast League team.

Also earning all-league honors were the Friedman sisters, Emily

and Lizzy.

Emily Friedman, a freshman, was a second-team pick and Lizzy

Friedman made the Honorable Mention squad.

“To have a first-team all-league pick is a big deal for our

program,” said Howard who mentioned that she could not remember a

Laguna player receiving first-team honors in the past 10 years.

“Emily’s making second team is an awesome accomplishment when you

consider she’s a freshman and the caliber of guards in our league.

Lizzy’s making honorable mention is fantastic.”
