Baylor sweeps ‘Eaters

* BASEBALL: A seven-run sixth inning helped visiting Baylor rally

for a 12-9 nonconference baseball victory over UC Irvine Sunday,

giving the eighth-ranked Bears a three-game sweep of the Anteaters.

Second baseman Matt Fisher’s three-run double helped put the

Anteaters (4-11) up, 4-1, in the first inning.

After Baylor (12-3) rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the third,

UCI scored again and upped its advantage to 6-4 heading into the

fateful sixth.

The Bears winning rally include 11 hitters, including David Murphy

who clouted a grand slam off reliever Chris Nicoll.

UCI’s Gregg Wallis drove in John Horwitz in the sixth and a

two-run homer by Chris Klemm, his first of the season, pulled the

Anteaters to within 12-9 in the eighth.

Klemm was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs to pace the hosts’

12-hit attack.

Baylor pounded out 18 hits.

UCI begins a three-game home-and-home series with San Diego State

Friday by visiting the Aztecs.

Uci wins pair

* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team bounced back

from a 9-5 loss to Cal to post nonconference victories over

Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Baptist in a busy Sunday at the Anteater

Aquatics Complex.

Cal, ranked No. 5, earned a 5-1 halftime lead to take care of the

No. 18-ranked Anteaters.

UCI, down at halftime to Pomona-Pitzer, 3-2, scored all of the

game’s seven second-half goals to post a 9-3 triumph, then pulled

away from Cal Baptist for a 7-5 win.

Erica Hoffman scored a game-high three goals in the win over

Pomona-Pitzer, while Meghan O’Donnell led the ‘Eaters with two goals

against Cal Baptist.

UCI is now 9-8.
