CdM nets 2-0 victory

* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team swept in singles

and each of its doubles teams collected one win as the Sea Kings

defeated visiting Beverly Hills, 12-6, in nonleague action Thursday.

Senior Garrett Snyder, sophomore Carsten Ball and sophomore Wesley

Miller swept their sets in singles play. The CdM No. 2 doubles team

of sophomores Nick Gingold and Alex Nguyen nearly defeated Beverly

Hills No. 1 doubles team, but lost, 7-5.

The Sea Kings improved to 2-0, while dealing Beverly Hills (1-1)

its first loss of the young season.

Pirates fall, 6-4

* BASEBALL: Robby Hudson hit a one-out solo home run to score

what proved to be the winning run in a two-run ninth inning as

visiting Riverside knocked off Orange Coast College, 6-4, Thursday in

Orange Empire Conference baseball.

The host Pirates (8-8-1, 0-4 in the OEC) watched a four-run lead

slip away when the Tigers (16-4, 2-2) scored three in the fifth and

once in the sixth to tie it.

Ryan Mathes wielded the big stick for Coast, going 3 for 4 with a

three-run homer in the first inning and scored a run. Tyler Shaffer

picked up an RBI with a single in the fourth inning.

Kyle Blumenthal kept Riverside in the hunt, going 3 for 5 with two

doubles, a stolen base, two RBIs and a run scored.

Eagles sweep Lancers

* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team earned its

second straight sweep of the young season, trouncing host Orange

Lutheran, 15-3, 15-5, 15-3, Thursday.

Josh Kornegay paced the winners (2-0) with six kills and six digs,

while Kris Hartwell (four kills) and freshman Dallas Kopp (three

kills and two blocks) also stood out for the Eagles.

Estancia is off until March 19, when it opens its inaugural Golden

West League campaign against visiting Westminster.

Orange Lutheran fell to 1-1.

Estancia tops Millikan

GOLF: The Estancia High boys golf team got the best of visiting

Millikan in the second half of an 18-hole nonleague match Thursday,

to collect a combined 416-425 victory.

Estancia senior Ryan Brown shot 3-over-par 39 to earn medalist

honors Thursday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Jason Cassidy (41), Jason Les (42), Greg Les (43), and Austin Serr

(44) helped the Eagles (1-0) post a 209-214 advantage over Thursday’s

nine holes.

Estancia hosts its own tournament Monday, featuring 36 two-man

teams representing 14 schools, at Mesa Verde CC.

Eagles whip Century

* TENNIS: Freshman Scott Braunsdorf swept at No. 1 singles and

Estancia High’s Nos. 2 and 3 doubles team also won three sets

Thursday as the Eagles defeated host Century, 12-6, in a nonleague

boys tennis match.

Garrett Stephenson and Shane Thompson swept at No. 2 doubles for

the Eagles (1-1), while Chase Raymond and David Do dropped only one

set in winning all three sets at No. 3 doubles. Estancia is at El

Modena today for a nonleague match at 3:15 p.m.

Newport earns first win

* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High boys golf team, led by Rhett

Palmer and Garrett Whitfield, defeated Palm Springs, 211-221, at Big

Canyon Country Club on a par-36 course Thursday.

Palmer and Whitfield shot five-over, while Palm Springs David

Leiberman set the pace with 39. David Motschenbacher (42), David

Pemstein (43) and Brandon Sowers (44) also contributed to Newport’s

first victory of the season.

Mustangs drop opener

* TENNIS: The Costa Mesa High boys tennis team opened its season

Thursday, but lost to host El Toro, 16-2, in a nonleague match.

David Le and Brian Nguyen won singles matches for Costa Mesa,

which travels to Ocean View Tuesday.

UCI falls, twice

* WATER POLO: Host San Diego State swept to 12-4 victory over UC

Irvine Thursday in nonconference women’s water polo play. Meghan

O’Donnell scored twice in the fourth quarter to pace the Anteaters.

In the evening, the Anteaters lost again as UC San Diego

prevailed, 8-4. O’Donnell had three goals for UCI (9-9).
