A great day in Laguna

Everyone had a flag. Marchers, watchers, riders. Flags were

everywhere -- and it was refreshing.

For the past few months, when flags have waved there was almost

always a political reason, and that reason usually had to do with the

country’s war on terrorism and possible war with Iraq.

The Patriots Day Parade was different, a day that offered what it

is most people mean when they talk about their pride in their

country.

You didn’t have to be pro-war to appreciate those who represented

the military. You didn’t have to be protesting for peace to be out

last Saturday morning.

As those representing the military marched as one, it was clear to

all that they were individuals -- children, adults, men and women --

all deserving of great respect.

Antique and classic cars were reminders of the country’s past --

ingenious innovation and the sun-filled fun of the dawn of the surf

lifestyle.

Children, seniors, theater groups and veterans all marched

together wearing smiles and expressing a love for life.

It was a time you could say, “What a great country that I get to

enjoy this?”

It was a day to enjoy the flag, even for those who are sometimes

offended to see it brandished in name of war or them versus us. On

this day, it felt like a bonding source of pride in history and

culture. Not a bad day out at all.
