Newport off to quick start, 8-3
A fast start gave the Newport Harbor High baseball team hope, which
turned into an 8-3 victory over Century Friday to begin the 2003
season in the Newport Elks Baseball Tournament.
Matt Erickson had a clutch two-out hit with the bases loaded to
drive in two in the bottom of the first to help Newport gain a 3-0
edge that quickly turned into a 6-1 margin by the end of three
innings at Newport Harbor. Erickson finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs.
Newport starter Ryan Torrey struck out four while scattering five
hits and two walks in a little more than six innings of work. Fellow
senior Ryan Heenan came in to stifle any comeback attempt in the top
of the seventh inning. Torrey went 1 for 3 with two runs scored.
R.J. Miller was 3 for 4 with one RBI and a run scored.
“We had a fast start,” said second-year Newport Coach Joel
Desguin.
The Sailors (1-0) host Pacifica in a nonleague doubleheader today
at noon and 3 p.m.
