Gabbe, Lavery UCI’s Big West Scholar-Athletes

* HONORS: UC Irvine senior women’s basketball standout Wendy Gabbe,

as well as Anteater men’s golf stalwart Mike Lavery, will be honored

at the 18th annual Big West Conference Scholar-Athlete recognition

breakfast Thursday at the Coast Anaheim Hotel.

Gabbe, the team captain, has twice been Big West Player of the

Week this season and has also been named to the Big West Conference

All-Academic team twice in her career. This season, she has been

honored with Verizon All-Academic honors and was a finalist for the

Creamland Dairies Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year. She

is an English major.

Lavery, an all-conference performer the last two years for the

two-time Big West champion Anteaters, was named to the 2002 PING

All-Pacific Region team. He is a social ecology major.

Ten male and 10 female recipients, representing 12 sports, were

chosen by their schools for outstanding achievement in athletic

competition, athletics and community involvement.

Anteaters one shot behind

* GOLF: UC Irvine is second by one stroke to Texas Tech after the

first day of the Antearter Invitational Monday at Coto de Caza Golf

and Racquet Club.

Texas Tech (614) is followed by UCI, Michigan (616), Cal State

Northridge (619) and the University of Denver (622).

Northridge’s Elizabeth Allen tops the individual leader board with

a two-round total of 143, 1-under par. UCI’s Angela Won, Stella Lee

and Shelly Raworth are all tied for fifth at 150.

The tournament concludes today with 18 holes.

Lions bow out with loss

* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University men’s basketball team ended

its season Monday with an 80-65 Golden State Athletic Conference loss

to visiting Biola.

Vanguard trailed by only three at halftime, but went cold after

intermission, making just 10 of 30 field-goal tries. James Hartman

scored a game-high 23 points for the Lions, who finish a tumultuous

season 7-24, 3-17 in conference.

Biola is now 21-10, 11-9.

UOP Tigers top Anteaters

* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 Big West

Conference decision to University of the Pacific Monday at the

Anteater Tennis Stadium.

The Anteaters won 2 of 3 doubles matches to claim the doubles

point, but received their lone singles victory from Greg Biorkman,

who rallied to defeat Niclas Otte, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

UCI’s Jonathan Endrikat and Brian Morton as well as the tandem of

Peter Suapol and Wkwesi Williams, won in doubles.

UCI fell to 7-7, 2-2 in conference.

OCC a two-stroke winner

* GOLF: The Orange Coast College men’s golf team edged host Mt.

San Jacinto Monday, 409-411, in a nonconference match at Oak Valley

Golf Club in Beaumont.

OCC sophomore Jake Allanach earned medalist honors with a

2-over-par 73.

Brad Champion (78), Jared Bruce (83), David Kendall (86) and Kelly

Wicks rounded out the scorers for the Pirates, who improved to 5-3.

Sailors trail Villa Park

* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High boys golf team faces a 197-210

deficit after the first nine holes of an 18-hole nonleague match that

began Monday at Green River Golf Club in Corona.

Sailor sophomore Davis Pemstein paced the visitors Monday with a

3-over-par 39, two strokes behind the co-medalists from Villa Park.

David Motschenbacher (40), Michael Benvenuti (42), Rhett Palmer

(44) and Jeff Lerner (45) also scored for the Tars.

‘Eaters 11th at tournament

* WATER POLO: UC Irvine defeated UC Davis, 9-2, Saturday to claim

11th place in the Gaucho Invitational at UC Santa Barbara.

The Anteaters led, 4-2, entering the fourth quarter, but scored

five goals in the final period to put the Aggies away.

Junior Erica Horman scored four goals for UCI (11-12, 1-5 in

conference).

The 16-team tournament included the top 11 teams in the country

and 14 of the top 20.

Earlier Saturday at the tournament, UCI fell to UC San Diego, 7-6,

in overtime.

Horman scored three goals to pace the Anteaters, who received two

goals from Rebecca Wedemeyer against UCSD.

Sea Kings victorious in opener

* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team opened

its season with a 15-12, 15-8, 13-15, 15-8 win at Capistrano Valley

Saturday night, a match originally scheduled for March 28, but

shifted to avoid a facility conflict.

Sophomore Kevin Welch paced the Sea Kings with 16 kills, followed

by senior Bart Welch (12), Tom Welch (seven) and Miles Yourman (six).

Greg Gabriel added 28 assists for the winners, who return to

action Friday in the first of two days at the Francis Parker

Tournament in San Diego.
