One of golf’s great ambassadors, Gary Player, committed Tuesday to

the 2003 Toshiba Senior Classic, the PGA Champions Tour event that

will be played March 21-23 at Newport Beach Country Club.

Ending a three-year hiatus from the Toshiba tournament, the

67-year-old World Golf Hall of Famer is one of only five players to

win the PGA Tour’s Grand Slam, along with Jack Nicklaus, Gene

Sarazen, Ben Hogan, and Tiger Woods.

One of the game’s most traveled players, the South African

superstar, who has a long line of other business interests, including

golf course design, has 24 PGA Tour victories and 19 Champions Tour

victories. He won nine major championships on the PGA Tour: the 1959,

1968 and 1974 British Open, the 1961, 1974 and 1978 Masters, the 1962

and 1972 PGA Championship and the 1965 U.S. Open.
