Unlike last year’s thrilling comeback by Corona del Mar High’s boys

swim team to tie Newport Harbor, this season’s installment of the

Battle of the Bay left little, if any, drama at the starting blocks.

Powered by the return of senior Andrew Cole, who spent last

weekend swimming in an international meet in Calgary, Alberta with

the Irvine Novaquatics club team, the Sailors (1-1) powered through

the depleted Sea Kings, 139-27.

Coach Tim Salvino scrambled to find swimmers to fill the lanes in

many events.

“It’s frustrating,” Salvino said. “We have to discuss the values

as far as swimming is concerned.” A number of swimmers left the meet

early for various reasons Salvino cited as “classes and tutoring.”

Newport won all 11 events, with Coach Jason Lynch highlighting the

efforts of Cole, who will swim for the University of Utah next

season, and senior Nathan Weiner. Cole won the 200-yard individual

medley (2:07.92) and the 100 freestyle (48.87) while Weiner took

first in the 100 backstroke (1:04.09).

“I feel better this week than in Canada,” said Cole, who battled

the flu while In Calgary last weekend. “My times are pretty solid. I

took a few seconds off the 50 free. For me, this is a really fun

meet.”

Newport senior Ross Sinclair won the 500 free (5:07.35) and 200

free (1:52.93), while junior Michael Bury placed first in both the 50

free (23.47) and 100 fly (59.32). Senior Jay Thompson touched first

in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.08).

Cole, junior Sean McGhie, Weiner and Bury paced the 200 free relay

(1:33.22) with Cole, McGhie, Bury and Thompson teaming up to take the

200 medley relay. Sinclair, Weiner, Bryan Auer and McGhie also took

first in the 400 free relay.

“Our kids were fairly motivated,” Lynch said. “I am disappointed

because I would have expected more competition because it is the

Battle of the Bay.”

Junior Robert Fries posted CdM’s best finish of the day (second)

in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.46), while junior Travis Hersh placed

third in the 200 IM (2:25.23).
