‘Eaters belt Waves

Anteater outfielder Chris Klemm was a home run short of hitting for

the cycle, finishing the game 3 or 4 with three runs and an RBI as UC

Irvine handed the Pepperdine Waves a 9-4 loss at Eddy D. Field

Stadium Wednesday.

The Anteaters jumped on Pepperdine starter James Carroll in the

top of the first. After loading the bases with three consecutive

singles, Pepperdine shortstop Kevin Estrada mishandled a Mark Wagner

grounder that yielded two runs. UCI’s Matt Fisher delivered his

team-leading 20th RBI with a single, giving the squad a 3-0 lead.

UC Irvine got another in the third when Klemm scored his second

run of the game on Carroll’s wild pitch. Right fielder Jordan Szabo

cashed in a Klemm double in the top of the fifth to give the

Anteaters the 5-2 lead.

Pepperdine’s Brandon Daguio had the squad’s second home run of the

game in the fifth to bring the Waves within two, but the Anteaters

got three more runs in the sixth on Brett Dalton’s two-run single and

Klemm’s RBI triple.

Alstot retired the last six batters in order as UCI improved to

8-12 on the season.

Dalton, who is coming off an ankle sprain, played his second game

of the season for UCI and went 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs.

Szabo extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-for-5,

one-run, one-RBI performance while Wagner also went 2 for 5 with two

runs batted in and a run scored.

UCI starter Michael Koehler got the win, improving to 1-1 on the

season after pitching the required five innings, yielding four runs

(two earned) on four hits and striking out two.

* BASEBALL: Concordia recorded a 5-2 Golden State Athletic

Conference baseball victory at Vanguard University Wednesday, banging

out 12 hits to drop the Lions to 14-11, 6-5 in the GSAC.

Justin Millward was the only Lion with multiple hits, going 2 for

4.

Sage rolls, 21-1

* BASEBALL: Tim Wilkins struck out 13 in four innings of work

and hit a solo home run in Sage Hill School’s 21-1 nonleague baseball

rout of visiting Tarbut V’Torah Wednesday.

Sage Hill (1-0) had 19 strikeouts and no walks. Zack Friedrichs

and Zack Shockley came on to relieve Wilkins and threw solidly.

Friedrichs struck out the side in the fifth inning.

Wilkins went 1 for 3 with four runs scored and had one RBI while

Friedrichs was 1 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

Tarbut committed 14 errors.

Sailors top El Toro

* BOYS TENNIS: Junior Tyler Deck and freshman Robert Khoury

swept in singles action to help lead Newport Harbor High’s boys

tennis team to a 14-4 nonleague road victory over El Toro Wednesday.

The Sailors improved to 2-1, while dealing El Toro (2-1) its first

loss of the season.

OCC wins thrice

* GOLF: The Orange Coast College men’s golf team earned three

Orange Empire Conference victories Wednesday at Santa Ana Country

Club.

The Pirates shot 383, besting visiting Riverside (387), Santa Ana

(401) and Cuyamaca (405).

Jake Allanach, shot 1-over-par 73 to lead the Pirates. He finished

two strokes behind medalist Joel Nash from Cuyamaca.

David Kendall (75), Jared Bruce (76), Kelly Wicks (78) and Brad

Champion (81) also scored for the Pirates (8-3, 4-3 in conference).

OCC cruises to win

* JC SWIM: Sherry Tsai, a freshman on the Orange Coast College

women’s swim team, set a school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle

(17:41.73), as OCC’s women’s and men’s teams dominated Orange Empire

Conference visitor Santa Ana Wednesday.

The Pirates (2-0) won every men’s and women’s event.

The OCC women were victorious, 152-13, while the men won, 139-38.

Sophomore Tyson Beamer won the 50 and 100 free to lead the

commanding effort by the OCC men.

Yale prevails

* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2

nonconference decision the visiting Yale Bulldogs Wednesday at

Anteater Tennis Stadium.

Tiffany Chang of UCI was tops in singles with a 6-1, 7-6 victory

over Margaret Purcell at the No. 1 slot.

Anna Bentzer rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 victory in No. 3 singles, but

that was the extent of UCI’s success as it fell to 8-7.

Tars lose to Mission

* BOYS GOLF: The Newport Harbor High boys golf team lost its

four-stroke, first-half lead and fell to Mission Viejo, as the two

teams finished play Wednesday at Mission Viejo Country Club.

The Diablos won, 396-404, and had two competitors share medalist

honors. Davis Pemstein was low man for the Sailors (1-1) at 39, while

Michael Benvenutti (40), Rhett Palmer (43), Brandon Sowers (43) and

Garrett Whitfield (45) rounded out the scoring. Benvenutti had the

lowest overall score for Newport with 77.

Mesa earns first win

* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team earned its

first win of the season Wednesday, topping nonleague host Los Amigos,

17-15, 16-14, 9-15, 15-3.

The Lobos served for game point in both of the first two games,

but Mesa refused to relent. The Mustangs (1-1) were led by Adam Nili

(17 kills), Tony Krikorian (17 digs), John Santos (20 assists) and

Gabe Gonzalez (four stuff blocks).

Floridians romp

* TENNIS: The University of West Florida Argonauts had it easy

in nonconference men’s and women’s tennis Wednesday, rolling to a 9-0

men’s victory and 8-1 women’s win at Vanguard University.

Guillaume DeVeibizier keyed West Florida’s men’s victory at No. 1

singles.

Vanguard’s Olga Hlushchenka, at No. 1 singles, was the Lions’ only

winner in women’s play.

Eagles win opener

* SWIMMING: Three first-place finishes put visiting Estancia

High in the driver’s seat to win a Golden West League boys dual swim

meet, 91-74, against Westminster.

The Eagles (2-0, 1-0 in league) received first-place efforts from

Frank Gamboa in the 200 individual medley (2:31.45), Paul Collier in

the 500 freestyle (6:17.21) and Chad Kunnert in the 100 backstroke

(1:09.6).

Sophomore Jason Enchanique came in third in the 100 free, besting

his time in three weeks by 30 seconds in the event, and gaining

praise from Coach John Carpenter.

Kunnert, Anthony Hermann, Gamboa and Collier teamed to win the 200

medley relay in 2:05.38.

In the girls meet, Marilyn Reich and Jayme Fay each won individual

events and contributed to Estancia’s only winning relay in the

Eagles’ 95-75 loss to Westminster.

Reich won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:43.47, while Faye

was victorious in the 500 freestyle (6:57.97). Reich and Faye were

joined by Britta Pitti and Lihini Keenawinna on the winning 400 free

relay quartet (4:42.19).

Estancia second-place finishers included Keennawinna (200 free in

2:41.19), Pitti (200 IM in 2:57.91), Courtney Hess (100 butterfly in 1:26.24); Jordi Bradshaw (500 free in 7:41.50) and Reich (100

breaststroke in 1:18.69).

The Eagles fell to 1-1, 0-1 in league.

OCC lets one slip away

* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team lost

its grip on sole possession of first place in the Orange Empire

Conference Wednesday, dropping a 30-28, 30-28, 30-18 decision at

Grossmont.

The Pirates (9-3, 6-2 in conference) are joined by Grossmont (9-3,

6-2) and Golden West at the top of the standings with three matches

remaining in the first round of OEC play.

OCC, with two starters out (disciplinary reasons and an injury)

had opportunities to win both of the first two games, Coach Chuck

Cutenese said.

The first game was tied at 25, 27 and 28, before an OCC hitting

error, followed by a blocking error, allowed the Griffins to prevail.

OCC led the second game, 19-9, but allowed Grossmont to rally.

Kaimana Kamalani and Poyer Poia each had six kills for OCC.
