Undefeated Hornets win Division I crown

The Hornets finished the regular season undefeated (13-0) downing the Riverside Magic, 51-30, in their game last weekend.

The seventh-and-eighth-grade boys National Junior Basketball team

won the Reebok Division I championship with the victory over

Riverside. The Hornets were led by Gus Ellis (11 points, 11

rebounds), Chase Pinesett (two blocks, five points, nine rebounds,

two assists), Andy Rovzar (seven points, three assists) and Erik Rask

(12 points, two assists and two steals.)

Also contributing were Timothy Regan (one rebound), Austin

Apramian (two points) and Thomas Dialynas (five points including a

three-pointer, three steals, one assist, one rebound).

J.P. Gormly (four points, two rebounds, one assist, one steal, one

block) and Kevin Rask (three points, one rebound, one steal) showed

strong offensive skills.

The Hornets are coached by Bob Rovzar and Rob Rask.

In other NJB championship action:

* Newport Clippers 53, Trabuco Heat 45

The Clippers, boys team, won the Reebok 9-Division 2 championship

Sunday at Whittier High .

Jackie Anderson, Joel Betonte, Ryan Capretz, Jim Nelson, Alec

Pastre, Jacob Stachowiak, Matthew Wheatley and Bryan Yasukocki are

team members.

Head Coach David Yasukochi and assistant Joel Betonte oversee the

team.

In All-Net play:

* Trevor Miles scored 35 points and the Newport-Mesa Red Raiders,

a fifth-grade boys All-Net basketball team, finished the regular

season undefeated (14-0) with a 54-49 victory over Santa Margarita.

Miles added 10 rebounds and Dillon Campbell finished with seven

points followed by six points each from Parker Stone and Neil O’Hara.

The Red Raiders also defeated Huntington Beach, 50-36, last

weekend.

Miles tallied 13 points followed by J.D. Abbott (nine), Andrew

Roth (seven), Campbell (six), Fletcher Della Grotta (six) and Collin

Krahe (five).

Randall Nelson recorded 10 assists and was complemented by Austin

Rios’ five.

In seventh-grade All-Net play:

* The Newport-Mesa seventh-grade boys team split two weekend

games to end league season in first place (12-2).

Newport lost to Yorba Linda in double overtime in its first game,

49-45, but came back strong to beat Fullerton, 44-35.

Robbie Boyer scored 26 to lead the way over the weekend. Joe

Eberhard and Jamie McGee each tallied 21 points and Jonathan Howse

paced all rebounders with 15 followed by Kyle Caldwell, P.J. Simpson

and Ali Meshkin, who all had 10 boards.

* The Newport-Mesa Sparks won the girls Division 3 championship

series of the National Junior Basketball league with a 33-29 victory

over Orange at Sunny Hills High in Fullerton on Sunday.

All-Star Duran Sharp led the Sparks with 20 points and five

blocked shots while Sam Archie chipped in seven points with seven

rebounds.

Gaby Carpenter added three points and seven rebounds and Alex

Aiello tallied seven steals alongside solid defense from Ricki

Archie, Gianna Light, Kathy Schneider and Diana Murphy.

The Sparks beat the Jurupa Hot Shots, 26-19, in the semifinal to

advance to the championship. Mike Sharp is the head coach and Sam

Aiello assists.
