Rally propels Cards, 11-10
* LITTLE LEAGUE: The Cardinals scored three runs in the last inning
to overcome a two-run deficit and beat the Reds, 11-10, in Newport Beach Little League majors action.
Michael Bloom pitched three innings, had two doubles and scored
three runs to lead the Cardinals.
Cory Vitalo had a strong showing at the plate to go with solid
defense from James Petrilli, Tommy Bangert and Jesse Starnes.
Sean Tokuyama, Michael Borchard, Evan McNerney and Will Morrow led
the Reds’ attack.
In Newport Harbor Baseball Association play:
* Eric Chebil had an RBI and Michael Carscadden, Eric Holland,
Sean Mangano, Jake Caughill and Brett Olinger all scored runs for the
Giants in an 11-7 victory over the Dodgers in Bronco Division
(11-and-12-year-olds) play.
Jake Dawson knocked a single down the line and Carscadden stymied
a possible Dodger comeback by snagging a hard-hit ball at third base
with two outs and two runners on in the sixth.
James Cunningham and Jacob McCann shared the Giants’ pitching
duties the last four innings, allowing only three runs.
Lakers win title, 63-40
* HOOPS: The Newport-Mesa Lakers defeated the Placentia Eagles,
63-40, to win the National Junior Basketball Division I Championship
Series.
The offense was led by Brandon Booth, Brandon Davis, Charley
O’Desky and Taylor Stevenson.
Grant Heffernan controlled the post, with support from Andrew
Whitaker, Spencer Richley and Frankie Darmiento.
The Lakers were coached by Lyle Davis and Ian Stevenson.
In other youth basketball:
* The Harbor View third- and fourth-grade girls basketball team
went undefeated in City of Newport Beach league play to claim the
championship.
Strong defense with unselfish passing keyed the victories.
Harbor View solidified its birth in the Southern California
Championships, in Rancho Cucamonga March 29-30.
The team includes: Cassidy Napolitano, Nikki Borchard, Coach Chris
Shatzel, Gabriella DiChiro, Margaret Valdes, Aurora Kaye and Duran
Sharp.
Newport starts fast
* SOCCER: AYSO’s Region 97 girls under-10 soccer team kicked off
the spring select all-star season with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory
over South Irvine.
Irvine scored early in the second quarter but Newport’s Natalie
Swift tied the game with minutes left in the half on a shot from the
left side.
Claire Silva found the net in the third quarter to give Newport
the lead for good.
Other scoring chances were provided by Blakeley Ficenec, Lauren
Grupe, Mary Yeager, Kiana Whipple and Beth Barnard.
The defense was controlled by Hannah McLeod, Sadye Busby and
Barnard. Tori Sarris and Whipple also played well in the midfield.
Registration underway
* YOUTH TRACK: Boys and girls ages 6 to 15 are invited to
compete in the Youth Track and Field Championships at Newport Harbor
High on Friday, April 11.
The event includes individual running, throwing and jumping events
as well as team relays.
All participants receive a T-shirt. Top-three finishers will be
awarded prizes and will represent Newport Beach in the Orange County
Championship Meet in May.
Optional clinics are held at various sites and are included in the
$10 preregistration fee.

On to the playoffs
* ROLLER HOCKEY: Newport Harbor High’s club varsity roller
hockey team defeated Villa Park, 8-2, Thursday night in its final
regular-season game before entering the playoffs.
Kevin Wong, Preston Kelly and Brett Robinson each netted two goals
with Cory Adler and Chase Kelly each tallying one goal and one assist
for Newport.
Alex Crouse, Kelly and Wong also added assists.
Collin Matthews and Collin Insley played strong defense for
Newport.
Elliott Thacker made 18 saves while Villa Park goalie Sirena
Enright stopped 25 shots.
Newport resumes action next week at the Gretzky Center in Irvine.
