Simonoff in top form

* WRESTLING: Costa Mesa High senior Mike Simonoff went 4-0 to

capture the 152-pound division title in the Lakewood Wrestling

Invitational at Lakewood High Saturday.

Costa Mesa Coach Brett Shainfield said the tournament is in

preparation for the freestyle state tournament at Golden West

College, which advances the top three in each division to a national

tournament.

Simonoff was perfect in the Lakewood invitational. He recorded a

technical fall and two pins, and then defeated a wrestler from

Northwood, 6-0, in the title match.

Shainfield also said Costa Mesa senior Adam Donovan finished with

a 1-2 record at the CIF State Championships last week at University

of the Pacific.

Sailors top three foes

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team won

three of its four matches Saturday to finish third in the consolation

division of the San Diego Tournament of Champions at Francis Parker

High.

The Sailors defeated Santa Barbara, 15-8, 15-11, then topped

Laguna Beach, 15-10, 15-4. They lost to Santiago of Corona, 15-7,

15-8, before finishing with a 15-13, 15-6 triumph over Village

Christian from Sun Valley.

Senior Mike Toole compiled the most kills in the marathon day that

began at 8 a.m. and did not end until around 9 p.m., due to delays

with leaks in the gym.

Paul Toman, Nick Glassic, Adam Schlesinger, Nedim Pajevic and Nick

Kelly also played well for the Sailors.

Lion(s) of the Week

* HONORS: The Vanguard University women’s basketball team was

predicted to finish ninth in the 11-team Golden State Conference by

the circuit’s coaches before the season started. It did not take long

to see the Lions were not only underrated, but inspired by the notion

of such a low expectation level set for them by opposing coaches.

Vanguard finished 18-2 in the GSAC, the most wins recorded in the

conference in GSAC history. It was the Lions fourth GSAC

championship.

For their accomplishments, the squad was honored with the Lion of

the Week award, given by the Vanguard Athletic Department.
