Sailors handle University in 12-2 victory

* SOFTBALL: Newport Harbor High’s softball team blasted 10 runs in

the first inning and cruised to a 12-2 nonleague win over host

University Tuesday.

A combination of hit-and-run, bunts and doubles produced the

Newport onslaught. Julianne Bass went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Kim

Moore also posted a 2-for-4 outing at the plate as the mercy rule was

enforced after the fifth inning.

Sasha Grumman made her first start of the season and got the

victory. She faced 17 batters and recorded seven strikeouts, allowing

only one run and four hits.

Grumman also starred at the plate, going 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Shortstop Athena Vasquez knocked in one RBI while going 2 for 2.

Ashley Gleason had two RBIs and went 1 for 2.

Darci Pennington and Kayleigh Horn each singled and collected one

RBI.

Newport improves to 4-1 and hosts Saddleback in a semifinal of the

Costa Mesa Tournament today at 3:30 p.m.

Eagles top Saddleback, 10-8

* TENNIS: Estancia High doubles partners Irshad Muntaz and Shane

Thompson bested Saddleback’s duo Tuesday to lift the Eagles to a 10-8

Golden West League win in boys tennis at Saddleback.

Muntaz and Thompson won the final set, 6-4, to give the Eagles

(4-4, 1-2 in league) the win, said Estancia Coach Rachel de los

Santos. Muntaz and Thompson were tied, 4-4, before taking the final

two games.

Estancia’s No. 3 doubles team of Chris Cacho and Louis Valdez had

no trouble in their match, winning, 6-2, 6-2, 7-5.

Scott Braunsdorf lost only two games to sweep at No. 1 singles

while Lewis Bradshaw took two games and Garrett Stephenson captured

one.

Oscar Nieves and David Do won seven games after dropping the first

set, 6-0, to Saddleback’s No. 1 doubles team.

Estancia faces host Costa Mesa Thursday at 3 p.m.

Sailors waste one, 8-7

* BASEBALL: Newport Harbor High’s baseball team struck for five

runs in the first inning and had a 6-4 lead entering the seventh

inning Tuesday, but two errors and a hit-batter proved decisive in a

four-run Los Amigos uprising and the Sailors bowed in the

rain-delayed fifth-place Costa Mesa Tournament game on the Newport

diamond, 8-7.

Dave Erickson had a two-run double in the first inning and

finished 2 for 4, and Jeff Sanchez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and R.J.

Muller was 2 for 3 with a run scored.

The Sailors (2-4) open Sea View League play Friday, hosting Aliso

Niguel.

Sage Hill rallies for 5-5 tie

* BASEBALL: Sage Hill School junior Jordan Salinger scored the

tying run in the bottom of the seventh in a nonleague baseball game

against Saddleback Valley Christian that was called after eight

innings (darkness).

The Lightning and Saddleback, tied, 5-5, will attempt to make up

the rest of the game during Sage Hill’s spring break tournament next

month. If they do not, the teams will have a tie on their records.

Salinger walked in the bottom of the seventh and stole second, one

of his three stolen bases in the game. Sophomore Matt Loper smacked a

two-out RBI single to bring Salinger in and tie the score, 5-5.

Orange too much for Mesa

* TENNIS: On a windy day at Costa Mesa High, visiting Orange

blew through the Mustangs, 15-3, in a boys Golden West League tennis

match Tuesday.

The Panthers improve to 4-3, 2-1 in the league while Mesa falls to

0-4, 0-2.

David Lee, Brian Nguyen and Huy Pham each took one game in singles

for the Mustang victories.

“Orange was more consistent,” said Joe Havens, Mesa’s girls tennis

coach who is filling in for head coach Bill Harader, who is scheduled

to return on Monday from a cruise on the Caspian Sea near Turkey.

* TENNIS: Orange Coast College’s women’s tennis team posted a

5-4 victory over Orange Empire Conference foe Riverside Tuesday on

the loser’s courts to maintain its grip on first place with a 7-0

conference record. Coast is 9-1 overall.

The key appeared to come at No. 3 singles where OCC’s Sabrina

Tanamal recovered from a slow start and won, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 over

Patricia Robles.

Lightning easy winner

* GOLF: Freshman Josh Chen and sophomore Jeff Cruttenden both

shot 42 on par-36 to help lead the Sage Hill School boys golf team to

a 222-234 Academy League victory over Capistrano Valley Christian

Tuesday at Strawberry Farms Golf Club.

Coach Erik Gnagy’s Lightning improved to 2-3, 2-2 in league and

received contributions from junior Alex Cochran (45), freshman Bryan

Kornswiet (45) and sophomore John Neff (48).

John Lee of Capistrano Valley Christian came in with the lowest

score, 39.

Newport trails by four

* GOLF: Newport Harbor High’s boys golf team trails Los

Alamitos, 213-217 after nine holes at Big Canyon CC’s par-36 course.

Davis Pemstein and David Motchenbacher were both at 42 for

Newport, with Brandon Sowers (43), Mike Benvenuti (43) and Garrett

Whitfield (47).

The match is scheduled to be completed April 30 at Coyote Hills

GC.

Eagles trail by 11 strokes

* GOLF: Jason Cassidy shot an even-par 36, but it was not enough

for the Estancia High boys golf team against Edison. The Chargers

shot 196 to Estancia’s 207 at Mesa Verde Golf & Country Club in the

first half of an 18-hole match that will conclude Thursday at

Seacliff Country Club Huntington Beach.

Cassidy, who shot the low round in Tuesday’s play, was 3-under at

one point, said his coach, Art Perry.

Other Estancia scores were: Austin Serr (42), Greg Les (42),

Marcus Sostak (43) and Ryan Brown (44).

Western stops Costa Mesa

* GOLF: Western’s Brock Erwin aced the par-3 eighth hole at

Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club’s Mesa Linda course en route to a

2-over par 36 and a 219-232 Western edge over Costa Mesa Tuesday.

Mesa’s Adam Donovan and Billy Jackson each shot 34 while Brian

Beach fired a 47 followed by Ryan Handy (48) and Joey Edwards (49).

Mesa is 3-6 and will play Western again Thursday at Dad Miller

Golf Course in Anaheim at 2:15 p.m.

Sage Hill wins in four

* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School’s boys vollleyball team had a

rocky start, but won three consecutive games against Academy League

foe Pasadena Poly to stay undefeated Tuesday.

Kevin Joyce (23 kills) and Macsun Frederick (12 kills) led the way

in a 12-15, 15-3, 15-9, 15-5, win at Sage Hill.

Joyce added four service aces to go with four by Frederick. Julian

Smith-Newman tallied 25 assists for Sage Hill (3-0, 2-0 in league).
