* HOOPS: For the first time in history, the Newport-Mesa fifth,

sixth, seventh and eighth-grade boys National Junior Basketball

All-Net basketball teams will advance to the National Tournament.

All four teams swept their championship games in the Sectional

Tournament last weekend.

“This is the first time we’ve placed four teams in the nationals,

which is a reflection of the tremendous efforts of the parents

volunteering their time at all levels, beginning at the first-grade

clinic level,” said Newport Mesa NJB President Chip Stassel.

Representing Newport at the nationals, which begin Friday at The

Pyramid in Long Beach, will be fifth-graders Randall Nelson, Dillon

Campbell, Austin Rios, J.D. Abbott, Fletcher Della Grotta, Andrew

Roth, Trevor Miles, Neil O’Hara, Parker Stone and Collin Krahe.

Sixth-graders include Frank DeNoewer, Michael Helfrich, Nick Freeman,

J.B. Green, Joey Jones, Andrew McDonald, Danny Miller, Sean Donovan,

Cameron Holmes and Danny Moskovits. Seventh-grade: Will Kelly, Robbie

Boyer, Jamie McGee, Kyle Caldwell, Jonathan Howse, R.J. D’Cruz, Joe

Eberhard, John Swift, Ali Meshkin and P.J. Simpson.

Eighth-grade: Matt Helfrich, Tony Jones, Chad Stassel, Nick Jones,

David Holmes, Francis Krahe, Taylor McClanahan, Hunt Rychel, Adam

Smith, Parker Roth and Weston Dunlap.

* The Newport-Mesa third-grade girls all-star basketball team

begins tournament play this weekend.

The Hoop Group is made up of Ricki Archie, Brooke Lux, Brooke

Migliori, Taylor Stefano, Olivia Tharp, Addison Richley, Sara

Silverman, Mary McKennon, Niki Zak and Shannon Griffith. Lou

Silverman and Joe Stefano coach the team.

Giants win, 6-4

* BASEBALL: The Giants scored five runs in the first 1 1/3

innings and held off the Mariners, 6-4, in Newport Beach Little

League AAA play.

Mariner pitcher Mitch Gardner held the Giants to just one run over

the next 2 2/3 innings. For the Giants, Emery Molnar pitched two

shutout innings and Jack Schloemer and Austin Jones also provided

solid play on the mound.

Grant Davis came on to pitch for the Giants in the bottom of the

fourth inning with the bases loaded and one out for the Mariners, who

were trailing, 6-4. Davis retired both batters he faced, striking out

one to preserve the win.

Ashley Varner had a timely RBI for the Giants (3-1), who were also

helped by Davis’ two hits, one RBI and one run scored.

Sweeney leads way, 6-2

* BASEBALL: Four hits and three RBIs by Conor Sweeney led the

Astros to a 6-2 victory over the Dodgers in the Mustang Division of

the Newport Harbor Baseball Association.

Conor also pitched three innings, giving up one unearned run.

The Dodgers were led by Dillon Gillett with three innings pitched

while adding two hits, including a triple.

Friday signups

* ROLLER HOCKEY: The last day to sign up for the Boys & Girls

Club Spring Roller Hockey League is Friday.

The league is for boys and girls from first to eighth grades.

Games will be played on weeknights at the Lou Yantorn Branch at

2131 Tustin Ave. in Costa Mesa beginning in early April. The season

runs until mid-June and games usually last about an hour..

Teams will be formed Saturday. Call (949) 642-8372 for more
