Oilers shut down King

Colin Balester was near the top of his pitching game on Monday, and

his effort was enough to give Huntington Beach High another baseball

victory.

The junior shut down host Martin Luther King and the Oilers went

on to produce a 2-0 win.

Huntington Beach scored both of its runs in the fourth inning to

improve to 3-2 overall.

In the consolation semifinals of the North Orange County

Tournament, Huntington Beach slid past host Valencia, 7-6.

Nathan Keadle tossed a one-hitter and struck out five for his

first pitching win of the season.

In softball action, Edison fell in eight innings to El Dorado,

3-1, in consolation play at the Cypress Tournament.

The Golden Hawks scored three runs in the top of the eighth and

Edison was only able to score once in the bottom of the frame.

Prior to that loss, Edison was a 9-5 winner over Gahr in another

consolation bracket game.

Sophomore Heather Hamilton had three singles and scored a run, and

Taryn Campanale and Stacy Birk combined on the mound, to lead the

Chargers.

In boys’ volleyball, Huntington Beach, behind 13 kills by Kenny

Markwardt, improved to 4-0 victory home court sweep of Capistrano

Valley in nonleague action.

Marina was handed its first loss of the season by visiting Mira

Costa, which emerged with an 11-15, 15-11, 14-16, 15-9, 15-6 victory

in a tense, nonleague match.

In another nonleague match, Edison lost in three games to host San

Clemente.

In boys’ tennis, Edison improved to 6-1 by defeating Aliso Niguel,

12-6, on Monday. Thomas Shubert swept at No. 2 singles for the

Chargers.

The freshman also swept the opposition in Edison’s previous match,

another 12-6 triumph, this one, over host Dana Hills.
