Strikers claim crown with 5-0 victory
The Strikers, a girls’ Under-10 Division Silver All-Star team out of
AYSO Region 55, clinched a postseason tournament championship last
weekend.
The Strikers won the title by beating Region 1335B in their final
game, 5-0.
Leslie Schwene capped a strong tournament performance by allowing
no goals.
She was backed by an offense that included two goals by Sara
Weismann and one each by Kelli Barry, Shianne Phoenix and Alison
Baskin.
Barry opened the game’s scoring with a goal from 18 yards out, and
Weismann followed with a breakaway goal off an assist from
mid-fielder Christina Thien for a 2-0 lead.
The shutout was made possible by a stellar defensive performance
by Phoenix, Jordan Fender, Lauren Patriarca and Celeste Bountour.
The Strikers are coached by Rene Moya and Craig Weismann. Other
Strikers team members include Elle Macy, Paola Saieh and Alison
Baskin.

Strikers 1, Region 1355A 0
In a battle of unbeaten tournament teams, Christina Thien’s third
period goal turned out to be the match’s only score as the Strikers
assumed sole possession of first place.
The Strikers’ were led defensively by Phoenix, Fender, Patriarca,
Bountour and Schwene in goal.
Barry and Brittany Moya also played well for the Strikers.
Under-12 Division
Sponge Bobs 2, Region 94 1
The Sponge Bobs, one of Region 117’s girls’ Select teams,
prevailed last Saturday.
Center forward Hayley Townsend’s goal from the right-side just
five minutes into the match gave the Sponge Bobs a 1-0 lead.
After Region 94 tied the game, Sponge Bob goalie Shannon Bolotin
sent a long kick downfield that found forward Erika Longoria who put
the ball in the net for a 2-1 advantage.
