Breakers spike Capistrano Valley

The boys’ nonleague prep volleyball match between Laguna Beach and

Capistrano Valley played on Tuesday went down to the wire, and it was

the visiting Breakers who emerged with a 10-15, 15-12, 18-16, 2-15, 15-8 victory.

Balance played a key role in Laguna’s road triumph, which put the

Breakers’ overall record at 4-6.

Outside hitter Matt Anderson led the team in the kill department

with 22 and came up with three blocks.

Middle blocker Mike Chiaverini finished with 15 kills and a

team-best eight blocks, setter Nick Aronoff had three kills, three

blocks and 54 assists, middle blocker/outside hitter Trey Chapel

recorded 11 kills, four aces and four blocks and Jason Kimball had 14

kills.

“Our guys could have easily folded, especially in that third game,

but we showed some character,” Laguna coach Curt Hanson said. “In

that fifth game, we really were focused and that allowed us to pull

this game out.”

In previous action, Laguna finished 22nd overall out of 32 teams

in the prestigious San Diego Tournament of Champions.

The Breakers defeated Mira Mesa and Poway, ranked eighth and 10th,

respectively, in San Diego County, and Chaparral of Las Vegas, the

top-ranked team in Nevada.

In seven tournament games, Anderson had 69 kills, 15 aces and five blocks, Chiaverini had 42 kills, seven aces and 15 blocks, Chapel had

30 kills, four aces and 10 blocks, Aronoff had eight kills, four

aces, eight blocks and 139 set assists and Talan Torriero had 34

kills and 15 blocks.

Up next for Laguna is a March 26 nonleague match at top-ranked San

Clemente.

“We are playing better and making some strides,” Hanson said. “The

kids are working hard in practice and we are getting better with our

defense and setting, two areas I thought we needed to work on.

“We’re still not where we want to be but each week you can see

their improvement on the court.”

In baseball, Orange Lutheran swept a Monday doubleheader from

Laguna Beach by scores of 6-3 and 9-0.

In boys’ soccer, the Pacific Coast League has announced its 2003

all-league selections and for the second consecutive year, named a

Laguna athlete as its MVP.

Junior Nick Kohlschrieber won the league’s top honor at the recent

coaches meeting, following in the footsteps of Ryan Wolfe, who won

the award in 2002.

Seven of Kohlschrieber’s Laguna teammates also earned all-league

honors.

Named to the First Team was Breakers’ team captain, Scott

Youngstead and senior defender Ben Jenett.

Second Team selections included senior goalkeeper Chris Stansbury,

junior forward Pablo Hernandez and mid-fielder Tyler Starow.

Mid-fielder Hunter Wells and Jamison Tisdail were among those

players named Honorable Mention.

Youngstead, Jennet and Hernandez also were named all-league in

2002.

In boys’ basketball, Laguna senior post Kyle Hogan has been named

to the South squad for the 2003 Orange County All-Star Basketball

Game.

The game will be played April 15 at Orange Coast College.

Hogan was one of 12 players named to the South squad that will be

coached by El Toro’s Todd Dixon.

During the 2002-03 prep basketball season, Hogan, an All-Pacific

Coast League selection, led the Breakers in scoring with 579 points,

in rebounding with 278 and in assists with 67.

He was second on the team in three-point field goals with 32.
