Pirates’ crew sweeps in season opener

* CREW: It was a clean sweep for the Orange Coast College men’s

crew team Saturday in Newport Harbor as it won all three races

against UCLA, San Diego State and the University of San Diego.

The Pirates fielded two boats in the Novice VIII with the top

Coast boat winning in 6:04.5. The “B” boat took third, beating teams

from SDSU and USD with a 6:24.7 clocking.

The Bucs junior varsity VIII team crossed the line almost a full

10 seconds ahead of second-place UCLA, finishing the course in

6:20.6. Coast fields six first-year rowers.

Coast’s Varsity VIII boat won the final race of the day by 2 1/2

boat lengths over UCLA in 6:11.6 over the Lido Channel course.

Anteaters fare well

* TRACK AND FIELD: Junior Lauren Adams and senior Santosh

Swamidass won individual events in the Cal Poly Track & Field

Invitational in San Luis Obispo Saturday. The meet was a non-scoring

competition.

Adams won the 400 meters as she finished with a season-best time

of 57.40 and almost a full second ahead of runner-up Alexis Hultine

of Cal Poly.

Swamidass placed first in the high jump as he cleared a

season-best height of 6-9 1/2, which is the qualifying mark for the

NCAA Regional Championships at Stanford May 30-31. Freshman teammate

Jon Wratten finished second Saturday with a mark of 6-7 1/2.

Second-place finishes in women’s competition included sophomore

Suzanne Purmort in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.61 for

the seventh-fastest time in UCI history, senior Wendy Chan in the

1,500 with a career-best time of 4:34.08, senior Cathy Picha in the

800 (2:16.85), and sophomore Erin Curtis in the pole vault at 12-0 to

tie her outdoor best this season.

Anteater men placing second included junior Kenny Vinh with a time

of 14.94 in the 110 high hurdles, sophomore Scott Jarvis in the 400

hurdles (54.54), senior Darrell Tozier in the 800 meters (1:53.85)

and sophomore Patrick Grogan in the triple jump (47-6 1/4 ).

Urtusuastegui sharp

* TRACK AND FIELD: Newport Harbor High senior Alec Urtusuastegui

ran a 1:59.13 in the 800 meters at the Arroyo Distance Carnival

Saturday at Azusa Pacific College, his first time under 2:00 in the

event.

Also with solid times for the Sailors were Courtney Marshall, Elda

Hernandez and Megan Randall.

Marshall PR’d in the 800 meters (2:29.13) and the 1,600 (5:26.81).

Hernandez had a personal best in the 800 at 2:29.21 and was third

in the 400 at 1:02.37, while Randall, fourth in the 400, PR’d with a

1:02.45.

Costa Mesa splits

* PREP SOFTBALL: The Costa Mesa High softball team, adjusting

from the loss of three starters, went 1-1 to open the Rialto

Tournament Saturday at Rialto High.

The Mustangs lost, 6-4, to Colton in the first game of pool play.

Senior Ann Marie Topps hammered a two-out, two-run home run in the

bottom of the fourth to pull Mesa within 6-4. The game ended after

five innings because of a 1-hour, 20-minute time limit.

Junior Jane-E Yamamoto earned her first pitching win of the season

and led the Mustangs (4-3) to a 2-1 victory over Yucaipa (7-2) in the

second game of pool play. Junior Michelle Miller eventually scored

after her double because of a two-base error, tying the score, 1-1,

in the bottom of the second inning.

With the bases loaded sophomore Uyen Mai took a walk to earn what

proved to be the game-winning RBI, in which junior Teresa Lau scored

in the bottom of the fourth.

Lions win one of two

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard softball team experienced opposite

displays of offense and went 1-1 on the final day of play in the

Pittsburgh State Tournament in Kansas Saturday.

The Lions (17-9-1) started the day with a 14-7 victory over

Bellevue, in which Vanguard pumped out 17 hits to advance to the

tourney’s Red Bracket championship game.

Senior Jill Jessen smacked out a two-run home run, while freshman

Vanessa Bolich and senior Celina Camarillo ripped a triple each.

Sophomores Lisa Jackson and Andrea Smidt collected one double

each.

Vanguard lost to Missouri Southern, 7-1, in the Red Bracket

championship. Missouri Southern broke the game open with six runs in

the bottom of the fourth inning.

* SOFTBALL: The Newport Harbor High softball team cranked out 13

hits, including two apiece from senior Athena Vasquez and sophomores

Ashley Gleason and Julianne Bass, as the Sailors defeated nonleague

host Anaheim, 12-0, in 5 1/2 innings Friday.

Gleason collected three RBIs, while Bass contributed two. Senior

pitcher Amanda Campbell struck out eight and allowed just one hit in

four innings for Newport (5-2).

Lions’ Hall sparkles

* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard senior Sarah Hall qualified for the

NAIA Outdoor Track Nationals while winning the women’s 1,500 meters

with a personal-best time (4:41.35) in a Golden State Athletic

Conference five-way meet at Point Loma Nazarene Saturday.

Sophomore Jenny Thune and Hall finished second and third in the

800. On the men’s side, freshman Matt Meyer finished second in the

1,500 (4:58.43) in his first time ever running the event. Freshman

Laine Stevens finished second in the 100 (1.282) and third in the 200

(26.32).
