2002-03 SECOND PERIOD INTERIM REPORT

Paul Reed, assistant superintendent of business services for the

district, will present the 2002-03 Second Period Interim Report to

the board for approval. The first report, already presented and

approved by the board, covers the budgetary status of the district

through Oct. 31. The second report, which Reed will present today,

covers the period ending Jan. 31.

The purpose of the report, required by the state twice a year, is

to raise awareness of financial obligations during the fiscal year,

including reserve requirements that the district may not be able to

meet.

The report reveals that Newport-Mesa, according to all available

information at this time, meets the state’s standards and criteria

for fiscal stability. It also reveals an unrestricted fund balance

projection and positive year-end cash position for the general fund

as a result of its proven financial stability.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The board is expected to approve the report.

HIGH SCHOOL COURSE ADDITION

In accordance with the necessary additions, revisions or deletions

to the High School Course of Study required twice during the academic

year, Jaime Castellanos, assistant superintendent of secondary

education, will seek approval from the board for the addition of a

new course, psychology of child development.

The new elective course, available to grades 10 to 12, will

examine terms and concepts within contemporary psychology to help

students function in a democratic society and develop good child-care

skills.

The addition has already received the approval from the director

of secondary curriculum and instruction, high school principals and

curriculum committees.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The board is expected to approve the addition to the High School

Course of Study.
