Vanguard University’s baseball team put visiting Cal Lutheran away

Thursday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game, 8-3, with a

10-hit offensive thrust keyed by the bats of Robert Cruz, Matt

Tisthammer and Jason Brunet.

Cruz went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, Tisthammer had a

double and went 2 for 4 with a run scored, and Brunet was 2 for 4

with a run scored and an RBI.

The Lions struck for three runs in the first inning.

Cruz walked and advanced to third on Tisthammer’s double, and

Jason Searle followed with a two-run single to give the Lions a 2-0

lead off its first three batters.

Matt Caston was the beneficiary of all this, going seven innings,

allowing two hits, striking out five and walking three in a

seven-inning stint.

Searle and Josh Franco mopped up in the final two innings.

Vanguard scored two more in the fourth when Cruz delivered a

run-scoring hit and Searle scored a teammate with a sacrifice fly.

Cal Lutheran could not break through until it scored two in the

sixth to pare the deficit to 6-2, but Vanguard came right back with

two more in the bottom of the inning to seal it.
