Doing their work quietly

The Costa Mesa-Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club doesn’t usually make

the headlines as it quietly goes about its work in the community.

In its latest club newsletter, the “Weakly Bull-A-ton,” they noted

they received thank you letters from Shalimar Teen Center for funding

a needy student to a winter camp and from the Orange County Science

and Engineering Fair for helping to fund the Orange County Science

and Engineering Fair, being held April 28 through May 4 at the Orange

County Fairgrounds.

The newsletter goes on to state that Lion Marvin Kravitz and his

wife, Jackie, along with member George Wines, attended the annual

Newport Mesa Schools Foundation dinner and presented a grant on

behalf of the club to a teacher. The Lions were the only service club

to give a grant to a teacher at the dinner.

At a board of directors’ meeting, a donation to the Lions

International Foundation in the honor of District Gov. Chuck Overbey

was approved, as was contribution to Canine Companions for

Independence, another in support of a new Exploring Post, Venture

Post 106, and still another donation for the Order of the Arrow, Boy

Scouts.

While a small club, the Costa Mesa-Orange Coast Lions is doing

some great work in the community under the leadership of President

Irwin Kinney. Congratulations.

HONORING TOP STUDENTS

The Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce will

honor the top 15 academic students from Corona del Mar and Newport

Harbor High School at a 7:30 a.m. breakfast on April 10, 2003, at the Radisson Hotel. Chaired by Commodore Norm Witt from the Irvine

Company, the annual breakfast gives the community a chance to

reinforce the importance of academic excellence.

The principals from the two schools will present each student,

citing their academic, school and community achievements, while local

elected officials present additional awards to the honorees.

I’ve got to say, it’s an impressive morning, one that our

daughters, when in junior high school, attended as a way of providing

motivation for their academic achievement in their high school years.

Tickets at $25 per person can be reserved by calling the chamber

office at (949) 729-4400. Each school will receive a contribution

from the breakfast proceeds for their academic programs.

ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

At a recent luncheon of the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa, President

Gregory Dennis honored athletes of the month Tisha Gray and Xochitl

Byfield, Estancia High School girls’ basketball co-captains, who were

presented by coach Tami Rappa, while boys’ coach Chris Sorce

introduced team member Carlos Pinto. Costa Mesa High School’s girl

athlete of the month, water polo player Katie Thorsness, was unable

to attend, but wrestling coach Brett Shainfeld presented Matt

Grubisich. After being introduced, the students received a

certificate recognizing the honor.

SERVICE CLUB MEETINGS

TUESDAY

7:30 a.m.: The 40-member Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club will

meet at the Five Crowns to hear memory expert and comedian Jeff Korn

discuss “Good with Names.”

6:30 p.m.: The Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club will meet at

the Costa Mesa Country Club to discuss the scaled down Fish Fry event

scheduled for May 31 and June 1 at the Neighborhood Community Center.

WEDNESDAY

7:15 a.m.: The 20-member South Coast Metro Rotary Club will meet

at the Center Club (www.southcoastmetro rotary.org); the Newport

Harbor Kiwanis Club will meet at the University Athletic Club.

Noon: The 40-member Exchange Club of the Orange Coast will meet at

the Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse in Santa Ana; the

30-member Soroptimist International Newport Harbor meets at the Santa

Ana Country Club

6 p.m.: The 60-member Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa will meet at

the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club to hear Paul Salata discuss plans for

28th annual Irrelevant Week, scheduled for June 23 through 27.

THURSDAY

7 a.m.: The 20-plus member Costa Mesa-Orange Costa Breakfast Lions

Club will meet at Mimi’s Cafe.

Noon: The 50-member Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club will meet at the

Holiday Inn; the 50-member Newport Beach-Corona del Mar Kiwanis Club

will meet at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club for a program by the

American Red Cross on earthquake and disaster preparedness

Newport Harbor will meet at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum for a

business meeting; and the 100-member Newport-Irvine Rotary Club will

meet at the Atrium Hotel for a program on court appointed special
