UC Irvine starting pitcher Brett Smith faced three batters above the

minimum in his complete-game shutout, leading the Anteaters to a 4-0

nonconference victory over Washington State Saturday at Anteater

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for UCI, setting up

today’s rubber game of the three-game series against the Cougars.

UCI’s Jon Horwitz led off with a single in the first and the fifth

inning with a triple, scoring on Mark Wagner’s double in the first

and on a grounder in the fifth. Horwitz, the Anteaters’ centerfielder

was 4 for 5 with a run scored and had an RBI in the eighth as UCI

added to their lead. Wagner, UCI’s catcher, was 2 for 4 with two

doubles and an RBI, scoring once.

Smith held Washington State to four hits, striking out 10 and

walking two for his first complete game of the season. He also

recorded a team-high sixth win (6-1).

For the Cougars, starting pitcher Bryce Chamberlin threw 7 1/3

innings, yielding all four UCI runs on eight hits while striking out

three to fall to 3-2 on the season.

The Anteaters improve to 11-18 overall as WSU falls to 7-19. The

two teams meet in the series finale today at noon at Anteater
