Orange Coast College professor of English and technical writing,

Don Pierstorff, has recently published a paperback book of poetry

with his son, Sam Pierstorff, titled “The Albatross Lives.” They are

also authors of “The Sauerkraut Burrito.” Sam has also written three

other books of poetry ... Robert W. Bein, chairman and chief

executive of RBF Consulting, was presented with the “Engineer of the

Year” award at the Orange County Engineering Council Award Banquet on

Feb. 22. Bein is a registered civil engineer and has more than 40

years of engineering experience in the public and private sector, and

is a registered civil engineer in 13 states. He has contributed to

engineering designs in world-renowned master planned communities in

places such as Irvine Ranch, Mission Viejo and Coto de Caza. He also

contributed to the early design phases of the UC Irvine. He has

served as the National President of the American Society of Civil

Engineers, and presently serves on the Orange County Business

Council’s Board of Directors, as Vice Chair for Public Affairs and as

an Executive Committee Member on the Board of the Southern California

Water Commission ... Reky Hiramoto, an associate with RBF

Consulting’s Land Development Department, has been selected as one of

the “New Faces of Engineering” by the National Organization of the

American Society of Civil Engineers. Hiramoto was selected as a

finalist from more than 100 applicants. He has seven years of

experience in civil engineering design and has worked of projects

such as Soka Universities of America, Aliso Viejo; Marriott Newport

Coast Villas Resort; and the Northwest Housing Infill Project at UCLA

... Orange Coast College’s defending national champion speech and

debate squad finished sixth out of 30 colleges in the 2003 California

Community College Speech and Debate Tournament held March 14 to 17 in

Costa Mesa. Sean Engard, Tony Mata, Traci Travis , Gina Chavez,

Christopher Buechler, William Edwards, Alexandra Raskin and Randy

Ortego all took home medals for their skills in topics such as

persuasive speaking, parliamentary debate and impromptu speaking.
