OCC topples Golden West

Orange Coast College’s men’s and women’s swim teams each defeated

rival Golden West Wednesday in Orange Empire Conference dual meets on

the Coast campus, but in varying fashion.

The Coast women, ranked No. 1 in the state, improved to 7-0 (4-0

in dual meets) with a convincing, 165-73, triumph. The Pirates won 11

of 14 events.

The men’s meet came down to the last relay, with Coast taking

first to secure the 109-100 victory. Tyson Beamer, Paul

Frankenberger, Billy Jolly and Billy Swanson completed the 400-yard

freestyle relay in 3:18.44.

Kimberly Frith tripled for Coast, winning the 200 free (1:58.36),

100 free (55.19) and 500 free (5:18.99) while Jenny Nelson, Sara

Natalizio and Sarah Mitchell all doubled. Nelson won the 50 butterfly

(27.59) and 100 fly (1:03.54) while Natalizio took first in the 100

backstroke (1:03.57) and 50 back (29.51). Mitchell won the 200

individual medley (2:19.71) and 100 IM (1:05.92).

Frith, Natalizio, Nelson and Wood took first in the 200 medley

relay (1:55.35) while Ashley Lowden, Natalizio, Mitchell and Erica

Nicholson won the 200 free relay in 1:45.09. Coast took second in

both events.

Beamer won the 50 free (22.35) while Frankenberger placed first in

the 100 free (50.45) and Tyson Mangham touched first in the 200 back

(2:11.64).

Coast (4-0 in dual meets and ranked in the state’s top four)

placed three swimmers in second Wednesday: Mitch Probert in the 1,000

free (11:17.99), Frankenberger in the 200 free (1:52.16) and Roger

Wong in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.52).

Coast next will compete in the Pasadena Invitational April 11-12.
